I know it’s been discussed before but family fun days at Randjies was a winner.
Plus we constantly say we don’t have the culture but I remember being at Germiston and Newmarket with plenty punters and batting to get into the big T function halls.
So where did all these punters go ?
Maybe we just got old?
With the exception of my Gran, non of my family were punters.
Thanks for thoughts, keep them coming.

It's easy people are gatvol of being robbed. Then the brilliant government blocks this then that. Myself you will see don't post to much anymore the people are gatvol of all this drama. Now the tote is open then it's not. What does anyone expect? There is no way to recover from this the game is done.

Started with Casinos(something for everyone from gran to children to music and sports lovers), then a large group emigrated, then sports betting and the lack of Racing on TV and Radio(there were no dedicated sports channels before DSTV so when the July was run every house with a TV had people watching and betting in sweeps because that was what was on for 2 hours on SABC. The internet came along and Newspapers like The Star the Sunday Times (big weekend results racing paper) lost huge sales - Gamblers that would have grown into the game also found poker as a better controlled bet... Retail Sponsors like OK and Game said why bother on such poor product exposure and some die-hards just realised that racing no longer worked for them and got out... I can't recall when last I bought a Sunday Times or The Star(I had my first job there- illegally- selling newspaper subscriptions as a 13 year old kid) or even The Citizen -

Not enough tracks, people get bored going to the same old boring tracks 2 times or 3 times a week
Look at the UK i think Musselburgh gets 20 meetings a year, there must be a 2-3000 people there today (paying R450 entry)
It`s the social occasion that counts, who cares if they only have one or two bets and spend the rest of the time having access all areas (to a certain extent)

Racing is an elitist sport and the betting public in my opinion has dwindled in numbers and there is also other priorities that take precedence when our Rands are being used. Many that were ardent punters are heavy into soccer and numbers hence the tote accountants are not complaining and they continue to attract patrons by dishing out free cars and free bets and other prizes but in the grand scheme of things horseracing is really dying and imvho its days are indeed numbered. Its the reality imo.

Then all is fine, then it's loadshedding . Myself don't believe in this game no more. Been playing for 25 years . Then you get done . Naw rather waste my money on something else that's enjoyable

It's all got to do with results. If punters where winning why would they leave a good thing?
Our results are pathetic, too many pick 6 carryovers which mean plenty horses with no form are winning and the favoured horses are not running like they should.
Bad horses are inconsistent horses and we have them coming out our ears here in SA.
We lack quality in every aspect in our racing, from our horses all the way up to how our racing is run.
We gone downhill so fast and it won't carry on if the new 'owners' don't do drastic changes.
You just can't blame punters and owners leaving when they see they just throwing money down the drain.

Morning Durbs, like most other things on the site, the stats have also been highlighted.
The norm as far as percentage of winning favs runs at around a third or 33%.
This has been a world trend for many years.
I don't dispute that the quality of horses would appear to be in a decline, in addition with the protocol fiasco it hardly encourages breeders to find World class horses?

In the 80’s when the Pick 6 was launched I can remember SARS interjecting that the following large Pick Six carryover had to be won. I think it was the 3rd carryover. The club had to decide what to do. In those days there WERE tote couplings. (Percentage betting was not available in those days but syndicate betting mitigated that problem).

You will be surprised to know many people in the general population in Gauteng don't even know we race daily in SA some think we only race on Met and July Day - I doubt many in Gauteng could name the Vaal as a race track(I know because whenever I mentioned "going to the Vaal" the reply would be " Are you going fishing ?" ) - In SA 40 years ago at least 5 of 10 adults could tell you who Muis Roberts was or Jean Hemming or Mr Millard - now you'd be hard pressed to find 1 out of 10 who could tell you who Lyle Hewitson is or Sean Tarry -It's hard to face facts but Racing is really a fringe sport now - more people could name an England soccer player than name a Jockey in SA. If it were not for the big Lebanese and Indian following racing would not exist - They are constant suppliers of young punters and owners - If only another 300 black owners emerged then Racing would get some traction but for whatever reason that demographic has declined - In most Totes in Gauteng black people are in the majority but they seem 40 years plus - I hardly see any young guns except those that rush in and place a soccer bet then leave without even looking up at the Racing screen - Strange though if Racing were to stop tomorrow I would not find myself moving to sports betting as I really only enjoy punting on horses...

Re: How do we market racing ?

Morning guys.
Can I ask a question?
Yesterday there was a Race at redcliffe. The trifecta paid R1503 (official tote dividend), I played it at Marshalls WOS. After being paid out, the payout changed on their system to R916, they stated the pool was too small and can't pay more than the pool.
I was asked to return money because I had been overpaid. I didn't moan but it didn't sit right with me.
I did research WSB, interbet, betxchange, Hollywood all paid the R1503. I bet into this same pool, why are other punters getting paid the R1503 (official dividend) but Marshalls are short changing me?
I thought there was only one official Trifecta pool is SA and official dividend?
Anyway, Marshall was suppose to give me a call about this but haven't had anyone contact me.
