A Question of Balance.
3 years 10 months ago - 3 years 10 months ago
Good afternoon all and hope you are Covid free and trying to get back to some normality after these troubled times.
I read we had a cabinet reshuffle, probably equivalent to rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
On the heading “A Question of Balance” was an LP by a band, The Moody Blues.
Probably before the time of many youngsters on the site.
They were excellent and probably a bit before their time.
One of their big songs from the album was “Question “ and it starts with the lines “why do we never get an answer, when we are knocking at the door”.
I am knocking at the door of the following bodies within racing : NHRA, SANTA, SABOAT, PHUMELELA, GOLD CIRCLE, BUSINESS RESCUE, RA, OWNERS AND TRAINERS, 4 RACING, BETFRED, GAMBLING BOARD, TELLYTRACK, CAPE RACING etc., with a
simple question, what is happening with SA racing?
Do we have a plan? who is working together? who is fighting with each other?
Is there a plan to sit around the table for a team effort to establish the best way forward?
Ok that was a few questions, I’m probably like most and just getting rather frustrated with the lack of transparency.
On a lighter note, enjoying my time in KZN with our kids, rather busy but excellent.
We’ve been to some nice places, Shongweni market, polo clubhouse as well as various pubs in area and heading of to Umhlanga on Friday.
On Sunday we’re going to watch a tribute band to Police and I get the impression that “Don’t Stand To Close To Me “ will be a popular request with Covid restrictions in place.
Local racing has hit a flat spot after the euphoria of the July and Durban season coming to an end.
On the International front, we have York next week.
Juddmonte Stakes where St Marks Basilica looks hard to beat.
Yorkshire Oaks where Snowball should be a blinder.
Also Nunthorpe Stakes and Ebor Handicap for some top class racing.
We will then be focusing on the ARC, October the 3rd where Adayar and Snowball should clash, my early selection is the Derby winner. They are currently 4/1 joint in the race that everyone wants to win.
Back to the title, here is a bit vintage Moody Blues .
Good Punting and may your God be with you.

One thing that`s sure is that racing is running at a loss at the moment if you go by the pools alone.
Especially in PE and the WC
And when are the feature races going back to the correct level of prize money?
Looking at the leading owners stakes last year CVN had 59 wins for 5.5m and in 2019 54 wins for 7.1m (stake cuts BR) and in 2018 72 wins for R15.5m
In fact the top 3 in 2018 had a combined of over R35m, this year the top 3 struggled to R16m

Just to add on.
I am avid follower of overseas racing. On Sunday Palace Pier is set to run in France. Also nominated is Poetic Flare, Mac Swiney, Mother Earth, Alpine Star, etc.
On Saturday its the last feature hoorah for Arlington Park, in Chicago. When I was growing up, the Arlington Million was a talked about race. The Beverly D Stakes takes place with Santa Barbra running. Crimson Palace a South African bred horse won this race. Also its the Arlington Million but named in honour for one of its owners now called the Mister D Stakes. The Apache won this race but was later disqualified for Mike de Kock.
Next week in the Nunthorpe, Golden Pal runs. Wesley Ward is on record "it could be one of the best he has trained".

Re: A Question of Balance.
3 years 10 months agoWhen it started in 1981, it was the world's first $1 million race. In 1985, it was a miracle it was run at all, just weeks after fire destroyed the grandstand
With Churchill Downs Inc. on the cusp of selling Arlington International Racecourse for redevelopment, the race this year is the Mr. D. Stakes (G1T), honoring long-time track owner Richard L. Duchossois, whose 100th birthday is Oct. 7.
If the Mr. D. Stakes (GT) was the final vestige of the Arlington Million, it will go into the history books as a victory for the locals, thanks to a felony-level theft.
Two Emmys , a 5-year-old English Channel gelding, shot to the lead the first time past the wire as jockey James Graham got him out and relaxed. He slowed the pace to a crawl and, when no one challenged, had plenty left down the Arlington International Racecourse stretch to win by a neck.

I think the Slacks have wasted 35 million dollars on this venture. They will end up selling it to Betfair. is my prediction.
The entire top structure in racing(across all provinces, all entities) is broken and needs new blood.

Palace Pier joined an elite group of stars in winning back-to-back runnings of the Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois, denying leading three-year-old Poetic Flare in a thrilling finish at Deauville.
The son of Kingman won the mile contest in impressive fashion last year, but had to dig deep on this occasion to hold off the challenge of 2,000 Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes winner Poetic Flare to emulate Spinning World and the great Miesque in winning the race for a second time in a row.
