The Merit Racing System

I was talking to a trainer yesterday and he complained about the MR
system as used in the RSA
he believes that the younger horses are to heavily penalised
He also said that there no trainers in favour of the system
It would be interesting to run a poll Yes or No
Is it possible for ABC to canvas all the trainers and without
using their names run such a poll

How else does one handicap? Most of the graded races are non -handicaps so no merit ratings there.
Merit ratings do not apply for plates ie maiden, novice, graduation, progress, so no merit ratings there.
Merit ratings do not seem to apply for Pinnacle Stakes, so no MR’s there.
It’s just the MRxx, FMxx and very few black-type races where MR’s are applicable. These races are aimed at the plodders who, say, 98% of which do not go on to become champions. They just run earning their keep more frequently.
Rather a think-tank about how to handicap plodders will be far more beneficial than just saying “we’re not happy with MR’s”. How should it be done and how should it be done whilst being aligned to international standards?
