Some facts regarding ownership in SA

As things spiral further into the abyss I thought I would write some of my experiences in the last 5 years. The last 5 years have seen my involvement increase from a few shares here and there to paying R300k a month to feed and "train" racehorses in SA. I have always championed ownership and involvement and I will continue to do so BUT I have learnt the hard way that some trainers are really no good for the game and slowly ill tell you ( and the internet for ever) the facts and figures.

Lesson number 1:

I was told by a stable assistant that we are the worst type of owners. I asked why and I was told " you pay your bills on time, there is no pressure to run and show your horses on the track"

Effectively I was told (with witnesses) that the quickest way to asses your un raced horse is to NOT pay the bills.

Lesson 1 = Sad state of affairs.

lesson 2 will follow soon...

Lesson 2

Make sure you have at least an interest into 2 stables. This will trigger the following insights that I assure you is vital to your racing life and understanding the calibre of person you dealing with.

1: When your horse with stable A runs well and Stable B says nothing
2: When your trainer very subtly tells you how much better he/she would do with a horse
3: Having 2 or more interested in stables will also show you that the words are different but the excuses are the same.

These 3 things are vital to your sanity if you should so wish to continue in racing in South Africa. Compromising on them is the norm and even I have fallen for this.

Lesson 2 = Sad state of affairs

Oh Yes there are many lessons still. Some lessons though will be quite positive and inspiring. All owners are concerned however as you will slowly see with my lessons there are a few trainers that are genuinely professional and 100%.
