Wow. The punters were a lot braver back in the day. Definitely from the Silver Ring Non- White Enclosure.
Good old Charlie Barends was a top jockey we heard a lot of in those days though I never saw him ride.
I think he won a lot of Gold Cups but his July record was not exciting.
Look at the size of the field...24 carded runners.
A few names can be seen that are familiar.
Dennis Durrant….was a jockey, then assistant to Herman Brown Snr, then became a trainer.
B. Passmore, Hilton Passmore.
Cyril Buckham was handicapper at Greyville later on I think.
Trevor Lange became a trainer, was father-in-law of some jockey I think.

The only reason this doesn't happen today is there are not enough people on course, and the money is bet online rather than on track. Some of the things we see happening in races today is a joke. Who remembers the incident at Clairwood with the Howells horse, My Sanctuary, getting left at the start after the gate failed to open? That was the biggest travesty of all time.

That's right Elvis, just couldn't recall at the time.
Charlie Barends was fil of Aubrey A.K.
Roberts who himself was a jockey then trainer. A.K. R, no relation to Michael Roberts, also won the July with Diza back in 1962 or so I think.
Ryan Roberts is the son of A.K.R.
The other connections are Jeff Lloyd and Gynn Schofield who married daughters of A.K.R. I think.
That's the Charlie Barends dynasty.

Thank you Bob for a great post and Mikesack for the insights...These guys were my dads' contemporaries...and how he related them to me left me with a better understanding of life in general...
I had my favourite jocks as a kid...still do...
He would tell me the rationale behind the big weight jocks...who had few rides
and then all jocks...
the ones with the soft hands...the ones with the natural sense of pace...those who could ride a finish...and those who just had an exceptional balance and did not have to ride a vigorous finish, and then those who finished with a tight rein...
I still feel that the average race weight should be lifted...as a 6.4" 100kg wannabe...;)

I recall a race in JHB,when punters staged a sit-down or something similar,I'm speaking under correction relying on memory(not Google) think it involved Willie "'the Alter Boy"' Uys and the horse could have been called Fast Gun or something like that.Cant remember the exact details,but think he didn't weigh in and the horse was scratched??

Anyone remember this incident

Yes I do and u are correct but think the horse lost weight from saddle bag and weighed in 4kilos light ?
