Favourite Punting memories?

Doesn`t need to be a huge win, might be your first winning bet or a life saver etc...
I have plenty punting stories, unfortunately most of them were losing bet stories
One winning bet i had i can remember like yesterday...
Was actually Christmas Eve 2009 (good memory huh) i was absolutely skint, no presents, no drink
Anyway i put my last (pennies ) on a Multiple at Turffontein and one by one they all popped.
Torah 14/1
Sonic Barrier 17/20
Call Of Angels 3/1
El Kapitaine 8/1 (Owned by Rob Faux)
Ended up a Merry Christmas!

21yo, 1980 Castle Tankard Borrowdale. On the Friday evening before, I went to a card call at Ascot (Bulawayo) and “bought” Strike It Rich. It cost me $100 on the nose and the pool returned just over $1000. I was competing against the Mayor of Bulawayo and I still remember him turning around to see me, the skinny kid, when he pulled out of the bidding. On Saturday the punters backed Strike It Rich into I think 7/2 and he smashed them all.
Strike It Rich, at a big price, went on to beat Foveros in the Omega Gold at the Big T and yours truly was on him again.
I don’t have the same stories these days

In the mid tolate 90's I was working as a waiter at a restaurant in Sandton with this mad Scotsman Alan.
Midweek quiet lunches snare an off whenever we could. Leg it to Wagers in Rosebank.
One day R20 straight line PA at the Vaal, they just don't stop coming in, by the 6thleg the Lebs are offering R1500 for the ticket.
Mate Alan say's "fook that hang on to it,"
Paid R377, R7500 walked out there went to Melville got hammered like two legends.

Always been a small punter.... but had friends who used to put it down. I remember their big loss on a horse called Regents Heir at Clairwood... odds on shot got beat. They really cashed in on the Johnny McCreedy trained babies that were winning easily first time out. Paddy Wynne used to bring them home lonely.

Two very old ones
I missed the first race at Powerhall dog track and backed every other race winner, my biggest bet was on a dog Kilbelin Again, my favourite dog.
I think I was earning about 15quid a week and won around 300 that night.
I took a Union Jack at the local bookie in loanhead, before we married.
I had to explain its a normal bet in Edinburgh, 8 trebles and a roll up or ATC, he accepted and they all arrived. The last winner was the the middle pipper (crucial) was the hottest fav of all the runners at 4/11.
The horse was called wate(not wait) and I had to hear the commentary via a closed bookies door as they used to close around 6?
When I went to collect, I was told to fuck off with my fancy Edinburgh bets after he paid up.
I was the talk of the village for weeks via Sues dad and we got married shortly after..
I can’t remember any horses name I lost a grand on last week 👎

....for R54 outlay got 15% of a R660K joint double carry over P6 pool back in 2002 @ Newmarket night racing....had both the dead heaters Lake Baikal and Kumba Mela in the 1st leg bankered De Los Rios in the 2nd and the stable companion Simply Salmon won.....in the last leg had 6 horses + scratching and the formless 100/1 shot Sioma Falls trained by Dijone Steyn won.....I added it because I liked the pedigree (very unfashionable son of Ankara) and thought it could surprise over the 2000m trip......was calculating that I win R3000 doubling up with the tote fav The Badger trained by Alec Laird ....instead I got a .R100K a very nice surprise indeed.....

The day I posted a Pick 6 in Kimberley on this forum and it came in for around R260,000.
I was the only winner of the pool so NONE OF YOU FECKERS FOLLOWED ME!

I cannot separate my 2 stories so ill tell them both.
1: I worked at Solly Kramers on fridays and saturdays to earn a few extra rand. I those days I was on R40 a Friday and R60 a Saturday. I had seen a horse called Sloop run and marked him down as a potential decent horse. When the betting came out for the KZN Guiness I started getting stuck in every friday at Loveday Street Tatts. By the time Nicholas Shearer brought him home I had won R9000
2: Myself , Don Habib and Paulo were like velcro. Don was off from riding and we decided to go to Sun City to watch Irene Kara ( an unforgivable crime) but none the less off we went. The 3 of us along with Craig Magua and Rambo Vermaak were pretty close and NOT horse close. Jolling close and chicks close all emanating from Q's supper club.
Anyways it was extremely rare for us to discuss horses. BUT on our way to Sun City that weekend Don did not shut up about his ride the following Saturday , Goldmark this and Goldmark that non stop.
Of course I got stuck in and eventually was holding quite a bit of Goldmark. On the Monday before the races on my little tracker Kadarko came up Stephen Jump for Robbie Sage. So I started with doubles Goldmark / Kadarko.
At the same time Frikkie Rambo Vermaak has been promised a brand new car by Budwin Nasiff if he wins the Nursery but his horse was scratched.
The heavens opened up that day Goldmark pissed up and 35 minutes later Kadarko won the Derby. I paid a biltong kiosk person R500 to hire his umbrella to go round collecting cash.
That night we all went for dinner in Glenvista somewhere and then on Ceasars Palace in Braamfontein. In those days My father earned R3000 a month. I won over R50 000 that day. That night alone I done R4000 in booze and then over the next few weeks another R35000 at Sun City.
miss those days
