The Cape Town Prawn Festival 2020

17 February 2020

As the Western Cape horse racing season comes to an end after a thrilling three months, it appears the best has been saved for last when it comes to on-course entertainment. With a decadent seafood feast on offer and a competitive line-up of feature races carded, the Cape Town Prawn Festival is a must for families, friends and racing enthusiasts alike.

Kenilworth Racecourse plays host to the Prawn Festival, which not only means thousands of succulent, freshly cooked prawns available for sale as the name suggest, but also promises an adrenalin-pumping days-worth of racing – with no less than five graded races carded. The race day concludes what has been a thrilling 2019/2020 #SummerOfChampions, providing race-goers with a fitting climax to the end of the Western Cape racing season.

“Racing fans can look forward to another feature-filled race day which is a real treat just 3 weeks after the SunMet“ says Jenna Adams from Racing It’s a Rush.

The racing programme includes the ARF Commemorative Cape Derby (Gr1); the Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes (Gr 2), the Vasco Prix du Cap (Gr 3), the Cape of Good Hope Nursery (Gr 3), the Kenilworth Fillies Nursery (Gr 3) and the Selangor Jet Master Stakes – providing an action-packed day for racing enthusiasts.

Equine action aside, the Cape Town Prawn Festival promises to be a day of culinary delights with thousands of kilograms of succulent, freshly cooked prawns being sizzled and sautéed on the grills. At just R99 for 25 prawns (which includes chips, rice and a choice of sauce), there will be few better Saturday lunch offers to consider. Couple that with live entertainment for adults and kids alike, an on-course market and prizes worth R50 000 to be given away on the day - including R20 000 worth of household appliances to one lucky race-goer – and you have the recipe for an unforgettable experience for the whole family.

Whether you attend for the racing, the prawns or the on-course activities, we recommend you come hungry – both for food and entertainment – both of which will be provided in abundance as we close out the #SummerOfChampions in the Western Cape.
