NHRA its OK to smash your horse if its a Grade One Feature
5 years 6 months ago
d) Apprentice D Schwarz was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M on the use of the crop) in that he struck the horse ZILLZAAL more than twelve times in the entire race. Apprentice Schwarz signed an Admission of Guilt and a fine of R2500 was imposed.
When assessing this penalty, the Board took into account the Grade 1 status of this race.
Now they may not intend for the above statement to read in the negative, however that is how i initially interpreted the Statement.

guys, YOU be in the shoes of Appie Dennis Schwarz......... 100m to go, your'e in front on a Roughie in A GROUP 1 RACE..... your'e leading the whole field... carrying 52 kgs........ ALL U GOTTA DO IS KEEP THE NAG GOING..... & that's what he did..... addrenalin must have been pumping a plenty
Bernard does this all the time & I bet he's had at least 10 GR 1 WINNERS..
I don't think the appie minds paying the fine on this one !
( just a pity MOST of his cut goes back to the jockey academy - but those are the rules i suppose )

The sanction makes the rule a joke, should just scrap the rule. What does it matter paying R2500 of R90 0000 earned???
Alberto Sanna picked up 12 weeks for a ride where he ignored instructions in Hong Kong, maybe that's why SA jocks say "There is no messing around in Hong Kong", are they implying that mess around is all they do in SA?
SA jockeys ride within the rules and will win at all costs, allow horses to hang right across the track, bump competitors out of the race, cut a horse in half, whatever it takes and the rules and sanctions here allow it. Why do they have to change their race riding habits when riding internationally?
We reap what we sow and fully deserve what we are dished up in SA racing.

Eish, if one breaks the rule the one must suffer the consequences else why have the rule?
But, anyway, it was a great ride.

Agree with some points and disagree with others. In HK there are no restrictions on whip use, so going to or coming from another racing jurisdiction does mean a difference in riding styles. They also go a good pace so you have to be a lot sharper to get position. The top jockeys here bully their way into good positions and therefore are found wanting else where.
I personally believe that senior jockeys get preference and a lot more leniency in these instances. It sadly looks like a case of who can talk the best in the boardroom in a lot of cases in South Africa.
