Viv Greybe: Champion trainer Alan Greeff takes a bye in the opening race but has a bright chance of success in Race 2 with Fools Garden (Greg Cheyne) who takes on six rivals in a FM 79 Handicap over 1900m at the Fairview Polytrack today.
January 27, 2019

This three-time winner – all with Cheyne up – comes off two encouraging runs under big weights. She was third over 2000m and then third again over 1600m.

With only 53kg to shoulder this time this four-year-old should be in the winner’s enclosure.

Australian-bred Landela (Teaque Gould), also out of Greeff’s yard, looks up to the task in Race 6, a FM 80 Handicap over 1400m.

Despite losing ground at the start, this progressive filly racked up four wins in a row – the last of which was over the course and distance. Gould was aboard the three-year-old only once and that was three runs back when she came from last to score decisively over 1300m.

Watch out for Greeff-trained Aloysius (Cheyne) in Race 7, a 1200m Novice Plate. This three-year-old’s only win was over 1200m on debut but has been threatening a win since. However, with a further drop in his merit rating and being well drawn the gelding could pop up this time.

Greeff sends out five lively candidates in Race 9, a FM 62 Handicap over 1100m. However, the one who makes most appeal in his stable’s attack is one-time winner Al’s Bells with Wayne Agrella aboard.

This four-year-old led for much of the race last time when a bright 1.50-length third out of 14 in a 1300m FM 64 Handicap. Dropping back to her most effective distance, the filly could exit the novice ranks.

TRAINER’S COMMENTS

RACE 1 :

1ST FOUR SELECTIONS :

2 / 10 / 1 / 5

GAVIN SMITH - Number 1 - MY BOY JACK : He races off a lengthy break and is expected to need the run, but popping up to place isn’t beyond him.

ALAN GREEFF - Number 10 - HIDDEN POWER : She takes on the boys but is in with a shout.

RACE 2 :

1ST FOUR SELECTIONS :

1 / 4 / 2 / 5

SHARON KOTZEN - Numbers 1, 2 and 3 - JUST MY STYLE, SEA BEAN & SEEKING WISDOM : Just my Style is in solid form and will enjoy the extra. Sea Bean will also appreciate a bit further and acts well on Poly. Seeking Wisdom took her last run and win well and though possibly better on grass will enjoy fillies only company for a change. All three are expected to run well and have a chance.

GAVIN SMITH - Numbers 4 and 6 - ROCKSETTE & CLOSE TO MY HEART : Rocksette is always thereabouts and can be competitive here. Close to my Heart ran a much improved last and we are hoping for a repeat.

RACE 3 :

FIRST FOUR SELECTIONS :

3 / 1 / 4 / 6

GAVIN SMITH - Numbers 1, 2 and 9 - ROSSLYN CHAPEL, GOLDEN SHAMROCK & SUPREME WINTER : Rosslyn Chapel and Golden Shamrock love track and trip and should be about the action. Supreme Winter is showing steady improvement.

TARA LAING - Number 3 - ARANJUEZ : He ran well on local debut and further improvement is exoected.

RACE 4 :

1ST FOUR SELECTIONS :

5 / 2 / 1 / 7

DUNCAN MCKENZIE - Number 1 - NEVERLETUGO : She is in good form and tries the mile again.

ALAN GREEFF - Number 2 - CHRISTMAS CRACKER : She steps back in trip, but can be effective over the mile and can run into quartets.

RACE 5 :

1ST FOUR SELECTIONS :

2 / 10 / 1 / 3

GAVIN SMITH - Numbers 1 and 3 - EXALTATION & MASTER NEWTON : Exaltation needed his last and can get closer. Master Newton is back in trip and can earn.

SHARON KOTZEN - Number 2 - MINDMYMOOOOD : He is in solid form and if he puts his best foot forward he has an each way shout.

RACE 6 :

1ST FOUR SELECTIONS :

7 / 2 / 6 / 1

JACQUES STRYDOM - Number 1 - SAO PAULO : She is a decent mare, loves track and trip and can get involved.

ALAN GREEFF - Numbers 6 and 7 - DOUBLE BLACK & LANDELA : Double Black ran an under par race in her last and better is expected from her. Landela has not put a foot wrong in PE and goes for five in a row.

RACE 7 :

1ST FOUR SELECTIONS :

10 / 3 / 1 / 4

GRANT PADDOCK - Numbers 1 and 3 - ROCK THE COT & BAKKIES : Both horses put up some good work in the week and are very well. If they don’t find the 1200m a touch sharp, they have an each way shout.

ALAN GREEFF - Numbers 9 and 10 - ALOYSIUS & TSESSEBE : Aloysius is never far back, he can place. Tsessebe takes on the boys but she is at her best on the Poly and she is a runner.

RACE 8 :

1ST FOUR SELECTIONS :

6 / 3 / 5 / 4

DUNCAN MCKENZIE - Number 3 - BARBARELLA NIGHTS : He is holding form, unfortunately drawn wide, but he does have the early pace to overcome it and should be thereabouts again.

GAVIN SMITH - Numbers 6 and 11 - PICK AGAIN & RULE THE WORLD : Pick Again is in solid form and he has a chance here. Rule the World is also never far back and can run into quartets.

RACE 9 :

1ST FOUR SELECTIONS :

2 / 4 / 3 / 8

GAVIN SMITH - Numbers 1, 8 and 9 - CHINA WOLF, KEEP IT GREEN & DUBAI QUEEN : China Wolf is better than her last, so we are hoping for an improved effort. Keep it Green and Dubai Queen can place.

ALAN GREEFF - Numbers 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 - DISTANT CALL, ESPRESSIVO, AL’S BELLS, MEGA SCENE & LADYSMITH : Distant Call and Ladysmith have their first runs for the yard. Distant Call can be competitive, Ladysmith could place. Espressivo was caught a long way back early in her last and ran on well, she could run into quartets. Al’s Bells is in very good form and has each way claims. Hoping for improvement from Mega Scene, she is capable of better
