Hit us with your favourites
6 years 5 months ago
Idea Copied from a social media, we’ve probably done the same in the past but I like this kind of stuff
Who’s your all-time favourites
Current Jockey: Lyle Hewitson
Retired Jockey: Pat Eddery
Trainer: Michael Stoute
Race: Gold Cup ( Cheltenham)
Festival: Cheltenham
Track Memory: Knocking a bookie of the stool at Musselburgh trying to get on... The look on his face when I was 1st in line to collect

At first I though it was a thread dedicated to Dave.
Current Jockey: Richard Fourie
Retired Jockey: Figgy
Trainer: Alec Laird
Race: Grand National
Festival: Ascot
Track Memory: I was 18 and was sitting in the betting shop in Margate. I already had a sizable bet on London News and had R200 left in my bank account. An hour before the race decided to run 2km to the ATM draw my last R200 and run back to back him again. Nearly everyone in the betting shop was on London News and the celebrations afterwards was epic.

Current Jockey : Richard Fourie (without much enthusiasm)
Retired Jockey : Bert Abercrombie
Trainer : Donald McCain (don't ask me why!)
Race ; Cheltenham Gold Cup, Grand National, King George
Festivals : Cheltenham, Aintree, Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood.
Track Memory : Losing a substantial winning bet ticket and still being paid (a month later).
Let's spice this up with a few 'hates' :
Worst Track : Greyville since they butchered the grass track.
Worst Race : Durban July - a third rate handicap race desperately in need of modernisation and a makeover.
Least Favourite Jockey : Bernard 'panelbeater' Fayd'Herbe

Punting since I was in grade 2.. now 50 years later...
Current Jockey. Nothing beat Striker.
Retired Jockey. Bartie Leisher
Trainer. Nic Claasen
Race. Durban July by far. Illustrador my first July on course, attended every July but one (28) since then (1990).
Track Memory. Worst- Ice cold day July in 1996, London News won, 6 of us shared in Jersey, 5 minutes each trying to get warmer....
Best- Marinaresco winning the July after I told everybody I know to punt it Tab paying R21 a win... Even told Zietsman online after he tiped a quarted picking 15 horses for 4th.. not mentioning Marinaresco..
Also, attending the 2014 Arc de Triomph at Longchamps when Treve won it's second Arc... The second race that day was won by a horse named FOUND and I never seen a better/faster horse alive. He won the Breeders Cup I think and the Arc afterwards.
Worst track. VAAL... And I speaking out of my pocket...
Worst race/ festival. LM/Queens Plate weekend, very overrated. Being advertised as one of the top 5 racing festivals/days in the world... Not even top 5 in South Africa IMO. dream on.
Least Favourite Jockey. Gavin Lerena. Most unfriendly person in racing.

Current Jockey: Striker
Retired Jockey: A Fortune
Trainer: MF de Kock
Horse: Horse Chestnut
Race: July by far
Festival: Dubai
Track Memory:
BEST: Ipi Tombe winning the July! I was on Angus big time, got 20-1 ante post at Bruma! Fukc!! But what a race! If you watch the race I am at the winning post with a grey sweater on! Grandstand side with my arms, then arm, then nothing in the air, all eyes fixed on Angus the entire race and only saw Ipi Tombe after the line!
2nd best: Horse Chestnut playing with July winners in the Met
Worst: Sharing a jersey with ‘The Saint’ at my first and centenary running of the then Rothmans July - London News! Extremely cold but also a great race! Had 2 horses in my JP and P6, Eldoriza and London News! Eldoriza was coupled with Sleek Machine who ran second! Fukc again
Worst Track : Kimberley
Worst Race : Summer Cup
Least Favourite Jockey : A Marcus and M Khan
