Champion USA Mare makes debut in SA next week
6 years 11 months ago
Songbird (foaled April 30, 2013) is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse who was a two-time Eclipse Award winner. She won thirteen times, nine of them in Grade I races, and had career earnings of almost $4.7 million.
She was the 2015 American Champion Two-Year-Old Filly after being undefeated in four starts, including Grade I victories in the Del Mar Debutante Stakes, Chandelier Stakes and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. She was undefeated against three-year-old fillies in 2016 including the Grade I Santa Anita Oaks, Coaching Club American Oaks, Alabama and Cotillion Stakes. Her 11-race undefeated streak ended in the Breeders' Cup Distaff, where she was second by a scant nose to the 6-year-old champion mare, Beholder. Despite the loss, she was a unanimous selection as the American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly of 2016. In 2017 after her return to the racetrack was delayed by injury, she won the Grade I Ogden Phipps after a seven-month layoff and then won the Delaware Handicap in July for her ninth Grade I victory. In August, she finished second, beaten by just a neck, in the Personal Ensign Stakes in what became her final start.
Race 10 18 July 2018 makes her debut.

Isn't this crap what has got SA into the proverbial and necessitated some name changes to take place even after horses have been racing with them here for years?
I would bet every cent that I have that Barends and the affirmative hired at a seven figure salary to replace Judy, have never heard of Songbird.
And that in a nutshell spells what is so wrong at the Jockey Club.

Numerous champion horses of Europe, USA and Australia have also had their names replicated/repeated here in South Africa. Locally the sires, Free State and Enforce have had their names repeated in this decade. It's happening in everyone's watch!
In fact couple of years ago I started a thread on this.

It’s the same thing with Jooste using Mayfair Silks in the UK under his own name

.....I was about to also wade in....with all guns blazing....and blame the breeder too....however this is just a simple case of timing....or mistiming....the Summerhill bred filly was foaled on 04/10/2015.....and at this time....the great Songbird....was a 2year old with only 2 wins from her 1st 2 runs....in fact at the time Judy must have been there to enter the foal in the register before any awards were so rightfully bestowed on this great racehorse....

IFHA restricted names link below. Note certain prestigious races throughout the world if a horse wins that race it name automatically gets restricted. Nacarat is a restricted name

.....but having said that....a more proactive staff member like Judy.....would have remembered entering and having used this name....contacted the connections and explained that the name now is sin-ominous with a great racehorse and requested to review a possible name change....
