THE CAPE SALE – SA’S BEST VALUE FOR MONEY AUCTION!

Sunday will see the 2018 Cape Yearling Sale take place at the lavish Mistico Equestrian Centre near Paarl.

This sale is not only one of the most successful thoroughbred auctions held in the country, but also represents excellent value for money opportunities for shrewd buyers.

A long list of outstanding racehorses, bought for bargain prices, have been purchased off the Cape Yearling Sale in years gone by, with some examples including:

Sparkling Gem – bought for R85 000 at the 2007 Sale, the big daughter of Joshua Dancer went on to win the 2008 G1 Cape Fillies Guineas and banked more than R1.4 million during her career

Geepee S – also bought for R85 000 at the 2007 Cape Sale, the daughter of Goldkeeper proved a shrewd buy, dead-heating for first place in the G1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship

Ancestral Fore – a R27 500 buy from the 2008 Cape Sale, Ancestral Fore went on to win the G1 Gold Cup and earned over R1 million during his career

Royal Bencher - the son of Greys Inn was bought for a mere R50 000 at the 2010 Cape Sale but went on to earn over R1 000 000 and dead heated in the 2012 G1 SA Derby

Pagoda – a R100 000 buy from the 2014 sale has earned more than eight times his purchase price, with the son of Mogok having won the Listed SA Derby Trial and ran second in the G1 SA Derby

Spring Man –who cost R50 000 from the 2015 Cape Sale rates among the more promising 3yos this season and he has already banked more than three times his purchase price

No doubt, plenty more great buys will be found at Sunday’s sale!

Not attracting the attention he deserved, his breeders took him home and offered him as lot 48 at the 2016 BSA National Yearling Sales, where he was knocked down to Ian van Schalkwyk for R200k.

Stuart has done all the work with Surcharge, including starting him under saddle and prepping him for the 2016 CTS Emperor’s Palace Ready To Run sale. “We did not push him and just did enough to get him on the sale to qualify for the sales race and then buy him back. I actually had 7 horses on the sale and bought them all back.” Why go the sales race route? “For that sort of money, it’s a good sale,” he says honestly.

.....yeah, read this too....but how did it happen....is there no regulation about recycling horses through the various sales and now different sales houses.........loopholes through the Salesgate saga....when there was one sales body only horses that were not offered for sale and withdrawn could be re-offered at another sale.....having horses pass sold from one sale to the next then becomes a pinhookers paradise....we have already too many horses for too many sales and yet nothing to stop one from now selling the horses from sale to sale.....yearlings re-offered at the 2yr old sale....then again at a RTR sale....

pinhooking from company to company is allowed - If you want to pay the commission and race fees and run the risk that you get outbid and not be able buy your horse back then that's your problem.. If I buy an antique at some auction and then put it up on a bigger auction at Sothebys a month later there is no law against it and I doubt that any auction house would try to stop that as its extra commission. The whole point about pinhooking is that the guy with an eye can see that if he gives the horse a little time he can resell when it has grown into itself(or if he knows there is a sibling in the wings that is due to perform well at track) - Similar to buying an item on auction - fixing it - and then selling again having released the hidden value..

Laying claim to having sold a horse: Sales companies do that to promote themselves, but I wonder if any buyer has ever linked ability to sales company or sales venue. It's always just been nonsense advertising to look active to vendors. The horse is certainly independent to an auctioneer, so who cares?

There is a form of sale selection: vendors know that certain horses are not strong enough on paper to get onto particular sales. You don't want to get it wrong because you do your entry fee in cold blood. If a sales company has more than one sale, you can generally pay the bigger nomination fee and go to a lesser sale on the same ticket.

But Muhtiman, on an earlier post you say there are too many horses for sale. I suppose a seller could argue that, but why would a buyer?

Also, mares are mated to stallions 2 years prior, how do breeders anticipate numbers and markets so far in advance? There are many reasons why they might make certain decisions. If you fluke a new stallion well, you certainly won't be thinking you have too many yearlings.

A couple of years ago CTS sneaked a clause into their sales conditions that if a CTS sold horse is subsequently sold through any other auction house, then it loses its eligibility for CTS sales incentive races. When I kicked up a stink, they refused to remove the clause, but did ensure that it was subsequently brought to buyers' attention at the time of registration for buyers cards.
BSA does not have such a clause.
So, horses that are first offered by BSA, can then go on to CTS sales (eg. RTR) and qualify for both lots of incentive races.
BUT if you have bought eg at the CTS Premier sale, you will lose out on your million dollar sales race entry if you then eg. send it through the BSA 2yo sale.
With the recent much needed rationalisation of the sales calendar, this is less of an issue, but I still believe it is unfair and anti-competitive behaviour by CTS. I don't think they refund your levy so you don't see vendors taking a CTS purchase to a subsequent BSA sale.
SA is one of the few countries where sales race entries (charged to vendors) are compulsory- in most other places, they are entirely voluntary.

Correct This is normally a value for money sale But I believe this catalogue
is the weakest for a long time
There are a few strong pages but very few.
Lets hope that there are a number of good looking individuals on the sale
Also Fillies may be a better buy than colts
Anybody with an opinion after looking at the catalogue?
Muthi etc
