***MET DAY RUNNER COMMENTS***
G1 Sun Met:
LEGAL EAGLE and SAFE HARBOUR
I’m very happy with Legal Eagle. Everything’s gone well. He seems a bit more solid this year than last year, more battle hardy. We haven’t had the soundness issues – not that there were any big issues – but he’s a tougher horse this year. It is interesting to note that only he and Marinaresco have won at Grade 1 level over 2000m and further and I don’t think the distance stands against us in any way. We’ll probably be dropping him out, although I’m leaving the tactics to Anton Marcus. If Captain America doesn’t go to the front they’ll go at a walk, but a slow pace will suit us.
Safe Harbour has had a very good prep. She had a hoof abscess and had to be scratched from her race before the Paddock Stakes, so came in a run short. She’s come on with that run and is doing very well. She has as much chance as any of the others, running out at the weights.
G1 Investec Cape Derby
VISIGOTH
Visigoth is an optimistic entry.
G1 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes
ROCKIN RUSSIAN
This is the “Snowdance Stakes”. Rockin Russian came down for the CTS 1600 but was left out. She’s in Cape Town so we thought we might as well run in something. She’s doing well and improved with the addition of a tongue tie. We thought her run to Tap O’ Noth in the Cape Classic was a lovely run, but she’s an optimistic entry.
G1 Betting World Cape Flying Championship
TRIP TO HEAVEN
We’ve put in a lot of work into getting Trip To Heaven to start well and he started nicely in the Diadem Stakes. But then he was a little bit too keen in the race. It did bring him on very nicely for this. I think he may have been a little bit better last year, but there’s not much in it. It’s a strong field but not any stronger than he’s coped with comfortably in the past. If everything goes smoothly, he’s a massive runner.
CTS 1200
GREEN PLAINS and DESERT RYTHM
I think Green Plans can improve. Her first run in Cape Town was very good and she was maybe ridden with too much restraint in her next two – she travelled a bit too hard. She needs to be travelling comfortably and Lyle Hewitson mustn’t let her rip.
Desert Rhythm was interfered with quite significantly last time out but she has got it all to do. She is probably a better 1400m horse but for this kind of money, we’re taking our chances.
CTS 1600
Captain And Master, Aurelia Cotta
I’m very dissapoint with Captain and Master’s draw but he’s certainly good enough to win this race.
Aurelia Cotta, who travelled down on Thursday last week, has good form and we’re hoping for the best from a bad draw.
Tattersalls Summer Juvenile Stakes
ROYAL ITALIAN
Royal Italian is doing very well. I think he’s got a good each-way chance.
Kuda Sprint
CIRILLO, RIVONIA BOULEVARD, VARTANIUM, QUEEN OF THE DANCE and URBAN OASIS
It’s a very competitive race, but Cirillo will be there. He’s certainly a good Eachway chance. Like Royal Italian in the Summer Juvenile Stakes, he’s by Pomodoro and I’m hoping both can win for their sire.
Rivonia Boulevard will appreciate the step up in distance. His preparation has gone smoothly and he must have a small winning chance, at least a place chance.
Vartanium is going to improve quite nicely on his debut run. Whether he improves enough is another question but he should run a good race.
Queen Of The Dance also ran a good debut and with her sex allowance, must be a runner.
It’s the same story with Urban Oasis. She ran a good debut, is well weighted and has an Eachway chance.
These horses are improving at a rate of knots and there are a few in there with form. With luck in running we’ll be there.
