Sky Sports News first reported back in November that financier Staveley had submitted a formal bid of £250m to takeover the Tyneside club, already after months of negotiations.

A relegation compensation clause was understood to be a sticking point at one stage in negotiations.

Magpies manager Rafa Benitez had expressed concern that the talks were hampering his attempts to strengthen his squad in January, stating he did not know what funds he had to work with.

IMO if there is no takeover bid for Newcastle this January, it is inevitable Newcastle will be relegated due to the lack of world class strikers.

Stadium always filled up to the max even when we were in the Championship... Mike Ashley will get his price, just hope the new owner has the finances to back the club up.

Bob,
As I understand it,from an article I read on Sunday,he put about 130m to buy the club, and a subsequent 117m to keep things going.
Along with a few debts etc that had to be sorted out ,he must be looking for at least 300m.
Belief is that he wants out, but at the end of the day he is a businessman!
