Bookmaking odds have changed over the years
7 years 5 months ago - 7 years 5 months ago
I have taken bets with bookies for 40 years and more. The early day trends were always what was on the board was what you were laid. This changed over the years and the norm became that you could ask for a stretch of a horse, in fact bookies began pricing to build in that stretch, so as an example if they believed a horse was a 3/1 shot they would price this up at 28/10 and give the impression of being generous by laying the 3/1.
Now in my day, odds were pretty standard and there were no "strange" odds offered. To illustrate my point the odds offered between 2/1 and 3/1 were as follows:
2/1, 22/10, 5/2, 28/10, 3/1
So between 2's and 3's there were 3 levels of bet. Today we have weird and wonderful fractions that were never seen in my time. I have an old bookies board in my pub, the type that you "roll" to display odds, and this does not contain the new fractions. Lets compare the "new" fractions to the old between 2's and 3's
2/1, 21/10, 22/10, 9/4, 24/10, 5/2, 26/10, 28/10, 11/4, 17/6 ( the new flavour of the month it seems ), 3/1
There are now 9 layers of bets between 2's and 3's. My take on this is the bookies are not being generous, the stretch now becomes smaller. I wonder who the instigator for this new lot of odds are. My money is on Betting World, the tightest in the business.

Dave you're an old timer and from the UK - did you ever see 17/6 quoted there?
