Remembering a kindness by 'The Good'

The retirement of James Goodman represents another chapter closing in South African racing & a reminder of how things used to be.

I had planned a trip up to Johannesburg to attend ( I think) the National Two Year Old Sale. I thought it would be a good idea to stay over and attend a race meeting on the Saturday at Gosforth Park (Germiston).

I asked my trainer to organise a table at the course for the afternoon. Which I was quite happy (and expected) to pay for.

Upon arriving I was pleasantly surprised to be met by a cigar wielding James Goodman who ushered my party of four to a window table overlooking the course where we experienced a wonderful afternoon as guests of the club for free. As I recall even the drinks were covered. (Had we known that we might not have been so restrained!). James 'looked in' on us a number of times during the day.

I have never forgotten it as it was indicative of how owners were cherished by the industry when the club system was still in force.

Was that not the programme called The Summit on eTV? Pitted MDK, Azzman and The Good in something of a match race and then followed them for a couple of weeks during morning work and daily life? Think they had to use apprentices in the race as well.

What u doing up so early Hilton? Garrick i really enjoyed being the racing manager at GosforthPark and i loved looking after the visitors, trainers, and owners. Graham Beck and Barry Walters gave me carte blanche. Kind of you to post and remember. :cheer:
