Marketing- Phum vs GC

Was shocked to be asked if i was attending the “Jocks Chase on Sunday “ as I had not seen it in the press or much of a fuss made on here and other websites( check sp you won’t even see a mention)

And did you see the crowd? Must have been 50 paying customers!

Plus I think this is the lowest key Summer Handicap I can remember? Have budgets been slashed?

One thing Gold Circle get correct is marketing of their big race days and the factoids they send to the press

What’s going on?

I am not sure , maybe Don can answer you .

According to what we saw on TV , there was not much of a crowd , but Tellytrack and Larry reported that the fans had flocked to come watch. All 50 of them :)

So who knows . On a serious note - People have been B.ll Shi..g by moving the car park puting microphones up near the commentators , closing in the parade ring and making it smaller and look packed and busy , hoping to market it that way. All smoke and Mirrors , it caught up with them along time ago , now the public that attend in the rooms upstairs , think its very normal and that is how racing is .

......Phum/TT/RA are still preaching to the converted who in any case are leaving the game in droves....this Jockey International is becoming a lame duck as punters cannot find the wood from the trees....if it was done properly and marketed with some effort then it could work....but even Larry looked defeated as he had to thank connections for their support.....where in a big day would nominations be accepted from Kimberly trained participants.....that's how low he has to go to fill races....as trainers would prefer to have horses run in better places and more targeted type of races.....and with jocks that know the courses and their horses.....CT and PE gave them a miss...
because they dont know which ex-jump jockey is going to give them bliss....

i would guess maybe 1 in 10 people know the Sansui is running this weekend - I would think 3 out of 5 people in Gauteng know the Durban July - Maybe 1 in 1000 knew anything about the Jockey Chase in their own province

Gold Circle is one up on them as most of their big features are supported by media houses. Independent Media does alot of sponsoring for them.

Daily News 2000
Post Merchants Sprint
Mercury Sprint

Caxton

Rising Sun Challenge

I would have preferred that the jockeys International be run on a SATURDAY, as opposed to the Sunday.

Sunday racing, that's why maybe poor attendance seems to be the order of the day
I will only attend Sunday racing if I HAVE A RUNNER.

Well I wish the organizers involved all the best for next year and hope they all enjoy their holiday in Mauritius this weekend , for their Jockey international and get looked after by the Mauritian Turf Club and Sponsors.

....yes indeed a Sunday meeting was not a good idea either..... more like an after thought when they could not get PE and the Cape boys on board....the initial Razzmatazz wore off when Frankie said no.....or was it yes .....but I dont know.....then an unbalanced team comprising of 3 irishmen one an ex-Jump jockey....the other an Adien O' Brien pacemaker and then a real jock 9 times Irish champion yet none pointed that out.....the poor frog who's name no one can remember and the lone Pom with less than a dozen Gr1 wins with 3 of them won in India... :S
....and the late inclusion of the globe trotting Ozzie and 2 times Melbourne Cup winner.....the only reason I had an interest.....but on the face of it.....not that thrilling....as the horses that were carded to run looked like many from the 3rd and 4th string.....

you could have had piggot moore roberts lloyd etc and it would not make a difference - unless you have some proper incentive for punters to attend they just won't - Barring Strydom and maybe Khumalo how many jocks do you think joe public can name? The added risk of unknown riders would scare any rational punter off a meeting like this. If the drinks and meal bill for the weekend spent on the Jocks and entourage was given away as a cash prize for oncourse punters I'm sure more would have found the track ...

I agree about the jocks - either do it properly - and that includes marketing the event and getting jocks with international status to come - or do the simple thing and can the whole initiative

.....as I asked on the Sunday Turffontein thread....who benefits from these events....other than the participants and the inner circle.....why then keep flogging what has become an all too apparent non-event.....Larry's biggest detractors kept silent.....as there is nothing left to say....yet ego prevails like the little engine that says it could.....I say and have always said.... if you want to do something.....do it properly....or dont do it at all....
