Entry fees KZN

I see that this is gathering attention on SP and some questions are now being asked. I wonder where the collected money is going, and whether owners were canvassed on the change?

Easy tbh owners would always have been expected to pay for the barrier trials - who else is there to fleece?

So owners are being asked to put up money for the stakespot as the operators arent capable of funding it themselves anymore via betting turnover but those responsible for turnover have lifetime jobs

My opinions, for what they are worth -
1) The noms issue has nothing to do with barrier trials.
2) Coming off a bad financial year in terms of diminished Racing turnover and a steady rand which limited International income, the KZN stakes increase is to be commended. This stakes increase is welcome and appears to be the result of a lot more than nomination fees being charged.
3)The decision to charge nomination fees may not be all bad. Let's face it, the free nom system does result in extremely congested nominations per race. Too often we see some 38 or 40 horses nominated only to find a final field of 5 or 6 runners....
The only part that I don't really understand is that only half of the nom fee is refunded if the horse is eliminated. Maybe i missed something ....?

I see that KZN stakes have increased , from 1st November. Maiden stakes are up from R85k to R100k and a MR70 has increased from R78k to R90k, for example. I doubt that nom fees will come close to paying for the increases....

What is the point of refunding the fee if your horse is eliminated? You will still get congested noms in that case, if there is no consequence to blindly nominating knowing you have no hope of getting in.

Good point Thor.
Pirates, I do not know the actual numbers in terms of reduced meetings or fewer races, so i am only looking at things on face value eg increase in Stakes. So, what you are saying is that the stakes pot is the same but with less racing plus nom fees, the stakes increase is covered... that is probably correct, as I know that you are not prone to making statements like that without facts.
What I have learned over the last few years, as local racing turnover has dropped, is that it is difficult for the Operators to make a profit when hosting meetings and that profits come when racing is staged by the other Operator. This could be the reason for the reduction in races. In the late 60's and early 70's, normal racedays offered 7 races. We could well be heading back that way...

lg going back to when clairwood was still around and greyville was just grass the split was around 35 each to pmb clairwood and greyville per year but the difference was we could race 20 up the straight at clairwood and 16 around the turn and at greyville 16 around the turn but then came the poly and the max field is down to 12 and lets face it we needed to have more meetings as many horses werent getting runs due to the reduction in the maximun fields and this also leads to a major reduction in turnover as small fields are bad for betting ..so the number of meetings had to be increased and could have reached around 125 since the poly came about and as you said the operator who hosts the meeting loses money so who benefits... the boys up in joburg ..so around an extra 25 meetings are put on and multiply that by the loss per meeting and this ends you up in the dwang ..im very sure this total meetings per year has been decreased now at least by 15 to 20 for the coming season ..lets see
