Anyone able to find out/know what the most wins by an apprentice during his reign as an apprentice? Not talking about during their claim period, talking about the period as a whole... My guess would be Gav holds the record, but Lyle must be catching up quickly.....

In 2007 Lerena surpassed the most number of winners ridden by an apprentice whilst serving his indentures with a record 283 wins – a record that was previously held for 34 years by 11-times SA Champion Jockey Michael “Muis” Roberts.

Did Delpech not ride over 200 winners one season as an appie?

Thanks OTA... So, if Lyle has a season like last, he will be the new record holder... And there is nothing to say he wont imo.. riding very well, and riding for Tarry does help ;)

Unfair to compare, Muis didn't have the opportunity to ride 7 days a week.

Gavin also holds the record for most winners in a month (42 in June 2015) that will take some beating...and it was achieved from just 16 meetings
Give everything but up!

Lyle is a top class rider and a future SA champion jockey. He also has the personality to boot.

I believe that he is better than Murray.

What would be interesting is to look at the stats for Shorty De la Rey in the
1950 years
I seem to think he rode 106 winners in his first full season as an appy
At that time JHB racing was twice a week and public holidays
Say 110 times 8 races Maximum 880
Somebody must have all the old Racing Calenders Easy to check
I would believe 1953 or 1954
He was a legend in his lifetime

They didn't have the privilege of riding 7 days a week and it was more competitive between the appies. Now 2 or 3 standout above the rest.
