The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held at its Head Office on Wednesday, 12 July 2017, Jockey C Little was charged with the following contraventions of Rules of The NHA :
Rules 77.1.1 and 77.2.11, in that a urine specimen taken from him at the Vaal Racecourse on 5 January 2017, disclosed upon analysis the presence of Furosemide and Canrenone;
and
Rules 77.1.1, 77.2.3 and 77.2.11 in that a urine specimen taken from him at the Vaal Racecourse on 12 January 2017, disclosed upon analysis the presence of Methcathinone, Furosemide and Canrenone, which are banned substances in terms of the Rules of The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa.
The Inquiry Board, in Mr Little’s absence, entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf but found him guilty of both charges.
The Inquiry Board, in determining a suitable penalty, took into account all evidence that was led at the Inquiry as well as Mr Little’s record, with specific reference to the guilty finding by an Inquiry Board on 16 March 2016 for a similar offence. At that Inquiry, Jockey Little was found guilty and was suspended from riding in races for a period of ninety (90) days, sixty (60) days of which were wholly suspended for a period of twenty four (24) months.
As these charges fall within that period, the sixty (60) day portion of that suspended sentence will be enforced by this Inquiry Board. Therefore, Mr Little is suspended from riding in races for a period of one year (365 days) and, in addition, the suspended portion of sixty (60) days that was handed down at the Inquiry held on 16 March 2016, will come into effect.
Furthermore, Mr Little will be required to submit three urine specimens which test negative before he will be allowed to resume race riding.Horse Racing
He will also be required to submit urine samples on a regular basis for analysis by the NHA Laboratory on dates to be determined by the Chief Stipendiary Steward of the Central Provinces Stipendiary Board.
Mr Little has the right of appeal against both the finding and the penalty

Now I ask with tears in my eyes - He's obviously got a substance abuse problem so why was he not FORCED to complete a rehab program after his first offence? Many organisations have these programs in place - The SAJA should provide this service to its members as riding horses and starving yourself is incredibly stressful. That should fall strictly on the shoulders of SAJA as the welfare of all riders depends on sobriety in a race.

Also as an aside my wife worked for years as a specialist in the rehab world - it is possible to go in to most centres and pay for a comprehensive drug test or you can take a chance and buy an over the counter test at most chemists which are fairly accurate - So at the very least if you are a jockey that takes banned substances spend a few rands and test yourself before you take a chance riding

Chad Little must still be a young man?
I would think he need help
Ffs, banning him can only drive him into depression!
Would they do the same if it was one of the more popular/successfull jocks?
Do they know how tough it is for someone with his racing record?
It may be impossible for him to make a comeback :S

Let's be honest guys - he's only had 89 rides in two years so is that really a Profesional jockey ? 4 rides per month - that cant really pay for much in reality..

I have been told that Chad is one of the best judges of an unraced horse that there is. The problem with a jock who averages 4 rides a month is that he clearly needs to supplement his income and there are many stories of him sticking his punters into horses before the stable could have a bet. In truth who could blame him?
Whilst I sympathise with everyone with substance abuse problems I cannot sympathise with the scary thought of an intoxicated jock climbing on a 600kg horse and riding it - be that in work or heaven forbid in a race. The answer to this problem is proper regulation and refusing the renewal of licences to individuals who either dont have the talent or are unable to ride at a acceptable weight without drastic measures taken to achieve that weight.

Someone like Andrew Fortune could be used a Councillor for these guys.
problem if u not ready to listen any intervention will fail more often than not.
i hope he come back stronger than before. a year goes fast.
i wish him well it gonna be a hard journey if he chooses to take it.

I would think the proactive and empathetic approach would be to offer him a reduced sentence if he goes into rehab and tests clean for 6 months with monthly tests until his 425 days are done... turning your back on him helps nothing as it is very easy to slip into the abyss of complete drug abuse when you have nothing to work for.
