SUBJECT: WSB East Cape Poly Challenge Leg 2
DATE: Tuesday 12 April 2017
RELEASED BY: Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Ltd
The second leg of the WSB East Cape Poly Challenge over 1400m takes place at Fairview Friday. Sponsored by World Sports Betting, the Challenge carries a total of R600,000 in prize money.
Each race carries a stake of R100,000 and a R250,000 bonus will be paid to any horse who can win all three legs which are run on the Polytrack. The first leg was run over 1200m on Monday 27 March and the final leg, over 1600m, is on 12 May.
There is also a consolation bonus of R50,000 paid to the runner who accumulates the most points in all three legs but there is a condition to this bonus. The horse must participate in all three legs and win at least one.
The allocation of points for the Consolation are: 1st 10, 2nd 6, 3rd 4, 4th 3, 5th 2 and 6th 1
If ownership changes across the series, the bonus will be shared proportionately. In addition 5% of the bonus will be paid to winning trainer, 5% to the winning jockeys and 0.5% to the winning groom. If the trainer, jockey or groom changes across the series, the bonus will be shared proportionately.
The R250,000 bonus will not be paid out this year as there is no chance of any horses winning all three legs. Juan Two Three, winner of Leg 1 over 1200m last month, is not in the field for this event over 1400m.
Friday’s race, nonetheless, looks extremely competitive the horse who finished second in the first leg, Sir Duke, could put himself in line for that R50,000 payment.
Tara Laing’s charge is ultra-consistent and in 32 career runs has a record of 10 wins and 17 places. As far as the Polytrack at Fairview is concerned he has won three of 10 starts and placed on all the other seven occasions. He is well suited to the distance having won four races over 1400m and will be ridden by talented young jockey Callan Murray.
Jet Explorer is probably the classiest horse in the field but he is another who could find this trip too short. However, he has won over 1400m and cannot be written off. It is worth noting that trainer Justin Snaith has brought Bernard Fayd’Herbe from Cape Town to ride him.
With Friday being a public holiday anybody who is in Port Elizabeth could enjoy the day at Fairview. There will be free Easter eggs for all kids on course. To book lunch in the HB Christian Room please call 041 3721859.
