2017 CHARITY TURF CHALLENGE sponsored by TRACK AND BALL GAMING

The Daily News 2000 went down to the wire with Edict Of Nantes taking home the 20 points on offer from the SA Derby winner, Al Sahem who secured a valuable 14 points for his followers. Horizon put a below par effort behind when clear of the fourth horse and earned 10 points. In a thrilling finish to the Woolavington 2000, Lady Of The House kept going from the fast finishing Gimme Six and earned a the long shot bonus of 5 points on top of her 20 point haul for winning the Gr.1 event. Gimme Six is now the top point scorer with 28 points and this filly could go all the way this season with other big race options still ahead of her. Safe Harbour gave her followers 10 points for third place. In the final feature of the day, East Cape Derby winner, Captain Splendid, returned to winning form when taking the Gr.3 Lonsdale Stirrup Cup in dogged fashion and earned 9 points. My World and the veteran Greyville specialist, Serissa, earned 5 and 3 points respectively. Newlands was the only other point scorer this week when he earned a point from his Handicap victory in Cape Town.

This weekend sees the running of the very important Gr.1 Rising Sun Challenge and the return to action of the very popular entries, Trip To Heaven and Bela-Bela. On a great supporting card, the Gr.2 Tibouchina Stakes and Gr.3 Cup Trial are cracking renewals, the latter event offering Vodacom Durban July hopefuls of a last gasp attempt to make the final line up. Black Arthur, Elusive Silva and Nebula are prominent in the ante-post betting markets and strong fancies in the Charity Turf Challenge.

There was a dramatic change of guard at the top of the leader board with Premier League (2) surging to the lead with a near full house of point scorers and a tally of 130 points, 5 clear of second placed Premier League July and a further point clear of the joint third placed entries, Jelly Jungle Monkey (4), Premier League (1) and CM.

Premier League (2) netted a whopping 58 points on the weekend and only Always In Charge has yet to earn. The leader relies on Marinaresco and Just Sensual on the weekend.

Captain America bagged the second of the bonus races, the Gr.1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge, is dominant fashion and netted his followers a healthy 25 points. Trip To Heaven repeated his effort of a year ago, finishing in second place and took home 14 points, with the Mercury Sprint beckoning. Bela-Bela built on the promise of her SA Fillies Sprint effort and looks well placed to add to the 10 points she earned for her third place during the rest of the season.

In the Gr.2 Tibouchina Stakes, Just Sensual moved to joint top place on the leader board with her second 14 point haul. Nightingale (9 points) caught the eye finishing with a flourish and this year’s Jonsson Workwear Garden Province Stakes has the makings of a thriller! Anna Pavlova (6) points proved her Gauteng form to be top class, but word has it that the racy daughter of St Petersburg has run her last race in South Africa as she heads off to start the long journey to the USA.

Elusive Silva got the job done in the Cup Trial and secured his position in the Vodacom Durban July as well as earning his multitude of followers 9 points. Crowd Pleaser (5 points) ran a tremendous race in defeat, showing his liking for the Greyville circuit and Black Arthur (3 points) looks to be coming into the right sort of form with only three weeks to go.

The leader board changed again, with Jelly Jungle Monkey (4) rising to the top with 163 points, 1 clear of CM (6) and a further point clear of Kavasan Moodley (10). This is turning into a real humdinger of a competition, but with the top three entrants having no runners this weekend who is to say there will not be another change come next Sunday? The Gr.2 Post Merchants and Gr.3 Track And Ball Oaks and Derby are the weekend highlights. The full leader board can be found as a pdf on the website.
