Soccer in chaos in the Argentine.

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has sent a rough copy of their proposed new statutes for the Argentine Football Association (AFA), which club delegates are now studying and have to agree to — an occurence which seems almost impossible. FIFA wants these statutes finalised before the next AFA elections, slated for April 28.
Meanwhile, the top division’s clubs have decided to ask the government to pay them 540 million pesos for the cancellation of the Fútbol para todos programme that broadcast local soccer matches. That contract was due to run until 2019, but the government cancelled it at the end of last year. The cash was not forthcoming and nor is there any arrangement in place with other TV companies — now including ESPN apparently — which were interested in paying for the TV rights to local soccer. The restart of the second half of the local season is scheduled for the weekend of February 12.
But will it restart? Players from Banfied and Newell’s Old Boys have broken off training because of the non-payment of their salaries. Banfield’s players were offered 50 percent of what they are owed as part of a payment plan, but refused the offer. Often these payment plans are then not complied with.
Newell’s committee says it has no money and asked the players to wait for another week. First Division B clubs have refused to start playing too unless they are paid money owed for TV rights... and it is quite a bit of money.
