Trainer Monique Snowden was found dead in a nearby river several hours after The Chilli Man had to be euthanised due to a bilateral fracture in a sesamoid sustained in the Emerald Express at Emerald Downs in Washington State last Sunday. Authorities are treating the case as an apparent suicide.
Snowden was separated from husband Dennis, assistant to trainer Frank Lucarelli, who told the Daily Racing Form the 37-year-old was inconsolable immediately after the race.
"Monique felt a lot of pressure about running him Sunday. She didn't see what was to be gained,” Snowden said.
"I had my arm around her trying to console her because she was crying and was devastated. Frank had a horse in the last race, and I told her I would see her after the race.
"When I went to the barn, she was gone. I tried to call her, but she never answered.”
Snowden, who won a Special Racetrack Achievement Award from the Washington Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association last year, came to racing from the eventing world and had been training racehorses at Emerald Downs since 2009.
Snowden said his wife had been depressed following the death of her mother from cancer several years ago.
"It was really tough on her, and she was never really the same after it happened. She still loved her life working with horses, and she was so positive about a lot of things,” Snowden said.
"She just took what happened on Sunday too hard."
