Bring back Betfair!
9 years 2 months ago
Enough is enough; bring back Betfair to this country. The only way bookies in this country let you take larger stake bets, is if you a looser. If you a winner, you get limited immediately. How is that fair? You know if you taking a larger stake bet, you are only being allowed as you are a looser. This is not a fair operation, if they allow you a certain stake from the beginning; you should be allowed a certain stake forever. Casinos are way fairer; they don’t say hey you winning you can’t bet any more. If I walk into a shop and their on 30 shirts on offer, they can’t stop me buying all 30! Interbet is a great product and company for horse racing, there service is amazing but they have no inplay liquid markets in terms of an exchange.
I had a bet on cricket, and won it, next day my limit is half.. I used sportingbet on this bet; they could have just gone and taken the bet back on betfair and they getting 20% of my money for free. I know sa bookies cant use betfair so don’t have this chance, but still it’s ludicrous, we must taken 11/1 when 20/1 is a fair price.
The whole system is corrupt and unjust and is completely against the punter. The only thing that is fair is interbet and in terms of sport, they must bring back betfair. These bookies have the punter on a hiding to nothing, and trust me if you are betting larger stakes you are most definitely a looser, as they won’t allow you to bet if you a winner.
If they have a problem with laying, well open up betfair in south Africa without the chance to lay. Cant betfair just get a SA licence and only offer the normal bets, and not laying option. At least we will get decent prices and not robbed by our crooks. Stakes won’t matter.
I know of someone who won a massive bet for relatively small stakes and yet they wouldn’t pay him because it was over there limit. I know they have T &C’s but most punters don’t go read the full T & C’s. What I don’t think is fair you take a 500 multiple to win a million(somehow you fluke it). You win the bet and they only pay you 500 k because that’s their limit, but then why the hell are they allowing you the bet. They all have supersmart online systems which could say,” sorry bet 250” , as that’s the max you can win. What happens if some guy comes on and puts 1 million rand on horse to win a million(Im talking hypothetical crap), They lay you the bet , then u win and they like sorry we will only pay you 500k. They have stolen 500k from you. It’s a load of shit and they should be held accountable for laying bets over there maximum limit and not paying you. If you go take 5 bets and win over the maximum, well that I understand and it’s your fault . End of the day I just feel the punter gets screwed no matter what and only buying bringing back betfair would it be fair, because our idiotic bookies won’t change! And yes I know it’s even worse in Europe: “bet with a bookie if you a looser, don’t try bet if you win. “ At least then you have the chance to bet with someone like betfair.

Welcome , Would just like to start me response with that BETFAIR sportsbook closed me down.. they also tried to charge me 39% premium charge for using the exchange after they closed my sportsbook and offered my CASINO access bonuses only..
Bookies have limits and ask you to read their terms etc when you join
Most bookies have single limits on their websites to stop waking up to massive liabilities on bent races etc( which happens) and to scare of betting coups etc.
I doubt there is any bookies online site that will allow a bet of 500k ( single bet) especially Betfair( they closed me down) so your 1 million rand statement although hypothetical will never be the case
problem with accepting multiple bets that excede limits etc is on yankees or patents is if they are only part won then the limit will not be exceded, so it`s really upto the punter to check the return part of the bet befre submitting and check liabilities..
Some bookies will let you bet more on the phone, say your limit is set online to R10, 000 and your wanting the 50k/50k single bet then [hone through..
I get frustrated at bookies limits etc but betfair would only help for single bets and if you try in SA there are still bookies willing to take punters on..
JIST it`s no better anywhere else and in some countries it`s worse

The biggest problem for punters is that they spend more time fighting each other for some reason ,rather than acting together to improve the situation for all.
I am 99% sure that no bookmaker can ,in terms of the consumer protection act, reduce your facility unless they reduce it for all clients. The very purpose of the act is to prevent discrimination of customers.A bookmaker is entitled to have big or small liabilities .............but not big for some and small for others.
I spread my bets as much as possible but if I am limited I will be testing my belief ..........but why a few who have already been limited don't test it ,I don't understand ..............doesn't even need legal representation .........merely claim differing limits is discrimination!
A lot of the rules which punters accept as a given are also no longer valid ...............they result from the days when gambling debts were not legally enforceable ,so the rules had to be accepted without recourse!
A bet with a bookmaker today is a contract ,legally enforceable, and subject to normal laws of contract. Some of the rules that bookmakers rely on would not stand up in court IMO (ie rectification of any contract, due to mistake, AFTER the offer and acceptance...............I'd like to see that tested!)
We could improve the lot of punters but, as I say, punters agree on very little ............this forum is ample proof!

I have been asked to elaborate on why I believe that bookmakers clients cannot be given discriminatory reduced limits and I put forward the following facts about the act!
Question1:are bookmakers subject to the CPA?
Answer: The CPA applies to every transaction occurring within the RSA in respect of promotion or supply of any goods or services.
(there is no suggestion in the act that Bookmakers would be excluded)
Following upon this:
Consumer rights:
a)the right to equality in the consumer market and protection against discriminatory marketing.
b)the right to fair and honest dealing
NB.
1)Suppliers are NOT permitted to limit access to goods and services
2)Suppliers are not permitted to prioritise any consumer groups over others when marketing, selling or distributing their goods and services.
3)Suppliers are not permitted to vary the quality of their goods and services in a discriminatory manner.
I don't know about you but I think different limits for winners and losers would constitute a breach!

I went to the Western Cape Gambling Board with this a few years ago.
Their response:The CPA does not apply to our industry,we have our own rules.
It's not like I haven't tried.Very frustrating,as I'm with you on this Rob.

Come back the old days when there where 20 bookmakers in the Gold ring and 12 on the crossbar
Once phoned Harry Symons in JHB and asked "How much will you lay me about a horse that was priced at 8 to 1 Answer 'How much do you want"
I said I would like to put R20k on
You can have R200k to 20
The horse won and later he told me he had a good race Had layed the bottom 2
at very short prices
Not able to do today as much smaller market I am told

With respect Huchberg ,I wouldn't take anything to the gambling board ...........the correct area for complaints is the dept of trade and industry!
(Areas that are excluded are defined in the act and the gambling industry is not excluded, no matter what the gambling board say!)

I think you are correct, that is probably the next step.
I have had multiple accounts either closed or massively restricted within the last year.
If I was cheating or being unethical in my transacting I could consider there actions justifiable, but simply being too clever for their liking clearly constitutes a discriminatory action on their part imo.
I nice long chat to the DTI would be very informative for them, and I may actually start making some progress on this matter.

On a lighter note , H.
If you should ever need to take legal advice make sure you don't use Phumelela's attorneys or you will end up broke AND losing. Lol.

Thanks for all your replies. Sporting bet most definitely would lay you any size multiple to start, well they did in the past, maybe it's changed. Although you will be quickly limited. The person I'm talking about, took a 50 rand multiple to win around 4 million. Incredible story but he won it and they obviously refused to pay him most of it. He has taken it too higher courts I think, although I'm not privy to any information. The point is they should never have layed him a bet to win that amount and should be held accountable. I know he spent a tiny amount but the amount doesn't matter. What happens if he spent 50k to win 4mil. He would basically be giving away a 3/4 of his money. It was a straight multiple. Think 11 legs .
Betfair will never limit anyone on normal markets unless you betting into there fixed odds which is pointless when you can get much better odds on normal markets. Yes if you a constant winner , you will be charged a premium charge, but still far Lower and at least can still get your size constantly.
I agree with all points and should be fair for all. They shouldn't be able to limit particular people as thats simply is not fair. Casino rules should be used as precedent, they don't turn people away. The playing fields need to be leveled.
I would love to hear what the dti says. Would be such a win if we could get this stopped.
And yes it's far worse in other countries, but at least they have other options like betfair etc. We have none and simply get screwed! Bookies are not bookies anymore, they don't make books like 10 years ago. Most just lay bets to loosing punters, and if you a winner well they won't lay you a bet.
