Legislate & Futura
9 years 4 months ago
Set to be retired after a discussion tomorrow between the relevant parties.
With Smart Call gone as well you would have to say Legal Eagle will start as the huge favourite for the July. Think French Navy's limit to push Legal Eagle would be 2000m so lets hopefully see some of the 3 year old stars step up.
Other 4 year olds like Light the Lights and Mac de Lago might keep their owners and trainers interested but others like The Conglomerate, Deo Juvente, Deputy Jud, Master's Eye & Krambambuli will have to find far too much.
The futures of the Equus Horse Of The Year-winning stablemates Futura and Legislate might not be on the racetrack as the stallion paddocks are now beckoning…
.
A meeting will be held on Friday by the connections of Futura and Legislate to discuss the futures of the two Justin Snaith-trained superstars.
However, bloodstock agent and stallion manager John Freeman, who has shares in both horses, will advise retirement to stud and believes most partners will agree.
Freeman said, “They were always going to be stallions one day and they were going to tell us when the time had come. I believe the time has now come. They are both sons of a top stallion in Dynasty, both are Equus Horses Of The Year Award winners and both have won four Gr 1s, so they have nothing left to prove.”
Legislate ran on well to finish a 1,5 length second in the Gr 1 L’Ormarin’s Queen’s Plate behind the 120 merit-rated Legal Eagle, but was unable to repel the closers in Saturday’s J&B Met after surprisingly setting the pace and could only manage 6th place.
Futura did not find his usual blistering turn of foot in the Queen’s Plate when finishing fifth. The explanation he had needed it had seemed spot on when he was turned out at the Met looking magnificent. However, he once again failed to quicken and only beat three horses home.
Freeman described Saturday’s Met as a fair race and offered his congratulations to the connections of the winner Smart Call, who put up the best performance by a filly in this country since the merit rating system was introduced just before the turn of the century.
Futura and Legislate will likely stand at Darkenstein Stud, who own shares in both horses.

9 years 4 months agoPomodoro and many others went the same way - once their middle leg starts running for them its time to look for mares and leave racing to the younger lot.Not nice to see top horses disgrace because they have lost the will to race.Bob Brogan wrote: Was there an announcement? or with the news of Smart Call and Noah doing a bunk have changed their minds?

Difficult having same owners having 2 sons of dynasty going to stud at same time. Divided support?
Would like to see Futura try blinkers as he seems sensible enough. Legislate didn't run badly in either of his starts but may have needed more racing to be fully fit?
Neither have any more to prove though both champs

They have said that Legislate will have another go at KZN season Gr1s before going to stud in 2016.
Now 3 Dynasty sons at stud in WC (these 2 plus Jackson)
As John Freeman has pointed out, after recent deaths of top sires Western Winter, Jet Master there is a gap. Trippi, Silvano, Dynasty only available to shareholders and book size being managed. Var and Capt Al very busy.
Young sires that have shown they can do the business are Elusive Fort, Ideal World , Judpot, Querari, Mambo in Seatle, Lateral, Seventh Rock, Grey's Inn. 3 of those are a bit of a trek for WC mares.
New kids Warm white night, Noordhoek Flyer look promising.
There is thus a big opportunity for new sires, as well as a chance for a couple to move up into the top 10 category.
