Greyhound Trainer jailed for cheating
9 years 6 months ago
THE first case of cheating in betting markets brought by the Gambling Commission has resulted in a jail sentence for a former greyhound trainer at Wimbledon.
Chris Mosdall, the disgraced former Wimbledon trainer, was on Thursday imprisoned for four and a half months after admitting cheating in a case that was prosecuted by the Gambling Commission.
This is the first time such a type of case had been brought by the Gambling Commission and is seen as being ground-breaking by widening the scope of potential criminal proceedings. Charges have previously tended to surround alleged conspiracy to defraud, such as was successfully prosecuted against Pakistan cricketers Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif in 2011, who were found guilty of match-fixing.
'Behaviour damages trust'
Judge Peter Lodder QC, sitting at Kingston Crown Court, told Mosdall: "Most of the evidence comes from covert recordings from the BBC Panorama programme in which you were quoted as saying: 'If you get caught you're out the door, but you take your chance'. You later bragged about being the 'biggest crook in Wimbledon'.
"You knew all too well that it strikes at the very heart of gambling. Ordinary gamblers are entitled to assume they have a fair chance and to assume that betting markets are open and above board. Your behaviour corrupts the process and significantly damages that trust."
A Greyhound Board of Great Britain spokesman said: "This case shows that under the 2005 Gambling Act, cheating is treated as a serious criminal offence which can attract a custodial sentence and punishment beyond any sanction applied by the Independent Disciplinary Committee of the GBGB."
Last June, Mosdall had been warned off after his GBGB licence was initially suspended since the issue first came to light the previous August.
The GBGB Disciplinary Committee then found him guilty of all the charges, involving the administering of a stopper, cyclyzine, to greyhounds with the intent of gaining better odds next time.

Don't know why he bothereed as he probably couldn't get a decent bet on anyway.
Just like no2son said yesterday, I got 11/8 they were only going 7/4 down the road. The Hills are alive with the sound of crying.
