And doctors don't write S7 scripts lightly, I don't think vets do either I had a dog with cancer and all she was given was S5 tramadol.
My mom has cancer and she doesn't even get s7 medication.

Schedule 7 scripts can only be signed off by the Minister of Health.

Firstly What drug was found?

The drugs held in a stable yard MUST be prescribed by a vet and must have a label stating the name of the horse and the date
Many stables in the past kept a drugs like Buscopan for treatment of mild colic
If a horse got colic, walk it around and given 200cc Busco and most cases they are OK
Now one has to call the Vet and the bill will be R1000.00 minimum

I do not know Mr Gray at all so have no idea as to what he hadin the cupboard
But neither do you!

,

Let's not tar all with the same brush....Elmer has a point but there are far more serious colic treatments and other emergency medications higher up on the schedule list than Buscopan......yet some trainers still keep them at hand even though the NHRA strictly forbids it.....colic in sport horses is no joke and it has ended the lives of more horses than any other ailment...
I asked a trainer once why take the risk.....because the horse comes 1st.....when struck with colic only a vet can adminster the medication.....but when a vet eventually arrives from a middle of the night call out many hours later....he often does not have with him what is required and therefore some trainers do...but I digress, the NHRA seriously needs to regulate and tabulate instead of dictate....they act all staunch over these minor infractions yet for over 2 decades they turned a blind eye to open steriod abuse.....

No Mac not absolutely correct we in that business...most Schedule 7 drugs are opioids or what we call very very strong pain killers used mostly used by anesthetists during ops and post op..an example would be sufentanil one of our drugs 4600 times more potent than morphine..where you are correct is that narcotic permits need to be organized for each year very strictly controlled and narcotic registers need to be filled in and signed off in the hospital theatre which are all matched to the quantities on the permits..so yes in a sense extremely well controlled by Govt authorities

I have seen that they have increased the scheduling of Bute used in horses for pain to Schedule 6 recently if I'm not mistaken due to some side effects.. Would not be my first drug preference however the human S5 opioid seems to be too costly although there are generics out which would reduce the price radically for a horse .. something like Tramadol maybe

Bob
A simple eye ointment would fall into the class that St.John was caught and charged with..... just saying.....

So let's leave the schedule 7 nonsense out of this thread until we have the facts maybe ?
