Stewards inquiry for runner-up

The stewards looked into Newnes's ride after the former Flat jockey appeared to take things easy late on.

They noted his explanation that he got tired, had been pushing from the off and that his legs turned to "jelly" for a stride or two. The stewards felt his mount would not have finished closer than second anyway.

"I got far too far back at the start and was always playing catch up from there," said Newnes. "I was staying on really well though in the final furlong.

"I know I wouldn't have been popular but, if I'd not have got so far back, I reckon I could have beaten the great man. I think I would have been the only one smiling though."
