The reason for this this article is that in my estimate the development of skill is the single most important element that needs attention to expand racing's customer base and future reach.
Unless the process of exposing people to racing is complemented by efforts to make the initial, early and longer term experience fun and entertaining the skills learning curve will always remain too much of a challenge for the majority of people.
Skilled players derive great enjoyment from the game and will stick around as we do, it's getting players there that needs to be addressed.
Human beings are naturally competitive , we see it in every aspect of life: sport, careers, romance, business, gambling and many more and this is the theme that needs to be tapped into to get new players started in racing. Provide a competitive game of skill in a strong social format and great results will be achieved.

Nothing captures the imagination more than "puzzles" crosswords ,Rubik Cube ,Sidoku etc etc .................................market racing as a daily "solvable" puzzle with better returns than crosswords, if successful!!!!...........

You make a great point Rob but fantasy games which are more interactive and competitive are showing far greater growth than traditional favourites, and importantly amongst a much younger demographic.
Even the mentioned challenges require different levels of skill to master and will eliminate many not willing to go the extra mile to gain the skill that will lead to increased and ultimate enjoyment.
It is how things are packaged that will determine if an individual will try it firstly and whether they will continue their involvement until the skills development process is far enough down the line to enable them to be competitive and successful.
it is the very reason why some people become top sportsman and businessman and other not. Nearly all of us have the physical and mental attributes to succeed in anything but it depends on how much we want it.
Finding the spark that ignites the passion to learn and be involved, and preferably amongst a large audience is the missing link in the process.

Racing ( punting online ) is only legal in some countries because it is considered a skill
The same countries have in the past 10 years banned online casino and poker sites
