NYRA consider Aqueduct changes after fatalities
BY PETER SCARGILL 8:55AM 10 JAN 2015
USA: Changes to the racing programme at Aqueduct are being considered following the death of 11 horses in the first 20 days of action during the track's winter meeting.
Racing has shifted to the inner dirt track for the winter racing season at the New York venue and officials are considering reducing the schedule to four days a week in January and February from five days at present.
A meeting is set to take place on Saturday between New York Racing Association (NYRA) management and members of the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association (NYTHA) in an effort to reduce the number of fatalities at the course.
In a statement, Rick Violette, president of the NYTHA, said: "The horsemen are obviously deeply concerned about the significant increase in equine fatalities at Aqueduct this winter.
"A group of trainers will meet on Saturday with a NYRA management team. There may not be one right answer, but we will use every avenue possible and examine every angle to address this situation.
"Everything will be on the table, from finding an independent track surface expert to come in and examine the inner track to a thorough reexamination of every procedure and protocol in place before a horse leaves the starting gate."
Martin Panza, senior vice president of racing operations for the NYRA, told DRF.com horsemen had raised no concerns about the inner track at Aqueduct but added everything was being done to allow only sound horses to race.
"I've never seen anything like this in the period of time I've been in racing," said Panza. "Our vets have the full authority if they don't like a horse to scratch a horse. In the morning, their checks - I feel pretty confident they're being very thorough throughout.
"In talking to the trainers and to the riders it's not the track. There are no complaints about the surface."

Sad very sad iro the death of those horses
If it is not the surface as proclaimed then an investigation should be launched into the type of riding by the jocs.
I see the authority has been given to the vets to scratch horses not deemed fully fit or otherwisen will that ever happen in SA.

Every old horse racing movie made in the states have scenes of Cripled horses being kept going
A bit like the old days of PE and Kimb
Bute is some drug

Royal I'm not sure if any far of country has age rules, doubt they do
But age has not really got anything to do with it, a horse like any animal gets stronger and more mature with age
Ps the was a 17 yo ran the other day over jumps in the UK
Was coming to win its race but was carried out before jumping the last
