NZ jockey banned for hitting fellow rider
Darryl Sherer - 24 Nov 2014 Leading New Zealand jumps jockey Isaac Lupton has been banned from riding for three months after being found guilty of deliberately striking another rider with his whip.


Lupton was found guilty of foul riding at a hearing of the NZ Judicial Control Authority in Tauranga last week.



Lupton did not attend the hearing but admitted the charge which stemmed from a race at Te Rapa on national jumps day in September.



Riding Facet in the highweight, Lupton struck Michael McNellis about the body and head with his whip at least four times passing the 300 metre mark.



Lupton said he regretted what had happened.



"I don't know why I reacted like that. I must have had a bit of a brain explosion," Lupton told Stuff.



"I'm pretty disappointed in myself, I've let myself down pretty badly."



Video evidence showed McNellis' mount Bad Taste lugging in on to Facet soon after turning for home. McNellis pulled off immediately however Lupton raised his right arm out and struck out at his rival.



Steward Warwick Seabrook said the starting point for such a serious offence was a ban of no less than four months but the committee took into account the mitigating factors that Lupton had admitted the breach and an excellent record over 17 years.

Lupton was given a 25 percent discount and suspended from riding until after June 30, effectively three months given highweights and jumps races do not start again until April.

Jockey charged with improper conduct after taking stick to rival

A Queensland-based rider was suspended for a month after striking a rival jockey with a whip.

Tracy O'Hara, the sister of Sydney jockey Kathy, pleaded guilty at a stewards' inquiry on Tuesday to an improper conduct charge stemming from an incident at Rockhampton's Callaghan Park on Saturday, November 8.

O'Hara gave evidence she "conducted herself improperly by striking jockey D (Dale) Evans with her whip and making physical contact with him by grabbing his riding vest" while the two jockeys were on horseback during trackwork.

It was alleged during the hearing that O'Hara was reacting to Evans's mount coming into contact with O'Hara's. She told the inquiry she believed it was deliberate but he denied it, claiming his horse was being unruly.

"Jockey Evans said he did not ride his horse to hit Tracy O'Hara's horse intentionally," chairman of stewards for the central Queensland region Luke Collins told the Rockhampton Bulletin.

"On the evidence before the inquiry stewards did not have the required standard of evidence to lay a charge against Evans."

O'Hara was the party that reported the incident and her actions to stewards "at the first available opportunity".

Stewards suspended O'Hara from November 23 until December 23. They also issued a fine of $1000 which was suspended for a period of 12 months on the basis O'Hara does not re-offend.

"I was very upset and confused in the inquiry," O'Hara said after stewards handed down their verdict. "From memory, only once in my career have I been suspended and that was a long time ago for careless riding.

"It may do me a lot of good to have a break for a month. It is very upsetting."

O'Hara has the right to appeal the stewards' decision.

Lupton says he had a brain explosion. He could have had a Transient Ischemic Attack ( TIA). A cloth in the brain which causes a temporary misbehaving. And memory loss.

I am sure a few of the Clan often have a touch of TIA

Couple of years ago at Greyville I remember Mark Khan and Striker involved in an incident in the Lonsdale Stirrup Cup where one of them whipped the other during the race or just after the line. In the end none of them ended up winning the race as The Badger won with Jeff Llyod. I think the horses that they rode were Superwood and The Eiger Sanction.
