Jay Peg got to Dubai as a horse with something left to work with, but to publically say basil wouldnt have achieved what herman did is really poor.Do you really think basil just let the horse leave SA and had nothing to do with the prep there?Take nothing away from herman,a great job but other comments uncalled for!

have to agree with mdk ,his form in south africa and especially in the natal winter season was definitly not up to winning thev race he did..his defeat in the natal guineas was a shock and his july run a shocker

You are missing the point,a trainer should not speak on national tv abt a colleague like he did.By the way the guineas defeat wasnt a shock as his preparation was badly affected by the poor weather and all connected knew he wasnt ready and his ride in the July should have got WORST ride of the month!

he has improved lengths under hermans care as his rating shows from when he arrived to after the carnival..nothing wrong with mdk telling the truth on tv...too many people in this game have plenty to say behing closed doors but havent got the balls to say it in public

i understand you all have your veiws but shall we just put the record straight. Basil Marcus has been training for almost five years. He was the man that purchased this incredible animal for 130 000 rand. He become the first horse in history to win all of the 3 year old races in Cape Town, ran the fastest cape Guinees and Derby. This was a magnificant training acheivement, for such a new trainer. Lets give credit where it is due, if a bloodstock agent purchased a horse for this price and it became the highest Earning SA bred horse ever it would become a highlight of their CV. It was an amazing team effort for all, brings back the mighty days of when Basil rode for Herman Snr. Jay Peg has been has been given time and care by Basil and won such an amazing race as he is one of the soundest champions around.

From an outside perspective..seems to me that MDK feels that he is the king of SA Racing and here a new trainer comes along and steals his thunder.

Basil Marcus has been the best local trainer to have hit SA racing. Lucky is in the same bracket with what they have acheived in a short while. I am always amazed at their passionaTE and humble interviews as if they did not expect to win the race - Basil and Lucky are both very hard working trainers doing the rounds endlessly before sales hence the good fortune shown with the horses they buy - Marcus has a ton of international experience and it shows and anyone that followed the career of Richard Fourie will attest to his radical improvement when taken under the wing by Marcus- i have never met or spoken to Marcus so there is definetly no hidden agenda but i sure have backed many of his horses and will continue to do so - I'm also not a big fan of Camden Park so to find one that is an international superstar with a will to win deserving of a Purple Heart is phenominal - strength to both ex-jocks who deserve recognition for their outstanding training ability

Wise,u mean terry? All i can say is well done to ALL the parties concerned from the day he was bought at Spier to the night he won.Without the time and care he received at the marcus stables in CT he would never have been sound enough to have stood up to Dubai's testing tracks.Mr H,he sure has a very big purple heart....

What must also be noted is that Sun Classique did not have the best of Natal seasons (we know the reasons) and mike bass is a master trainer so things happen in racing but if the ability is there the cream will rise regardless of who trains them
