South Africa’s premier horseracing season, The Summer Of Champions, will be launched at Durbanville Racecourse on Kuda Day, Saturday 4 October 2014.

The raceday includes plenty of action on the track and showcases a high quality double feature billing of the R250 000 Gr3 Kuda Matchem Stakes and the R250 000 Gr3 Lanzerac Diana Stakes.

Complementing the quality racing programme on offer, this family fun day in the idyllic country course setting includes an on course wine route and fruit route. For those wishing to make it the perfect summer’s day out, braai packs will be available on course. A host of other attractions for the younger set include jumping castles, pony rides, face painting and much more.

A major highlight will be the exciting 2nd annual Jockey’s Chase, a thrilling sprint for a good cause by our leading riders. Won by former Met winning jockey Aldo Domeyer last year, this year’s event sees a big field of 24 riders competing over 150m. Each Jockey is sponsored by various horseracing stakeholders and all proceeds will be donated to the Western Cape Association for Persons with Disabilities. This charity caters for the needs of over 10 000 persons with disabilities annually.

Another important event coinciding with the season launch will be the CTS Ready To Run Sale, which commences after the day’s racing and continues on Sunday 5 October.

Please note this is a licensed venue and no liquor or food may be brought onto the premises. Bars, a la carte menu and fast foods will be available. Braai packs and picnic baskets can be pre-ordered by calling Micaela on (021) 700 1600.

Tickets for the wine and fruit route can be obtained online at www.computicket.co.za

GREAT START TO THE SUMMER OF CHAMPIONS
The opening of The Summer of Champions season at Durbanville Racecourse on Saturday proved to be a great day of racing enjoyed by a crowd which included many new faces among their number.
The weight for age Gr 3 Kuda Matchem Stakes over 1400m for three and four-year-olds was won by the Glen Puller trained four-year-old Ashaawes gelding Reim. This was his third start to finish victory in succession.
Earlier, the weight for age Gr 3 Diana Stakes for three and four-year-old fillies was also won from start to finish by the Glen Kotzen trained three-year-old Judpot filly Double Whammy. Double Whammy has also won her last three races in succession.
The Jockey’ Chase over 150m was won by the defending champion Aldo Domeyer and he was so superior that he was able to run the last few metres backwards while taunting his rivals.
Kenilworth Racing Marketing Manager, Jenna Adams commented “We would like to thank all the jockeys for participating with great spirit and also express gratitude to horseracing stake holders for nominating the jockeys for the race. The event helped raise R15 000 for the Western Cape Association for Persons with Disabilities.’’
Also on the day, Racing. It’s a Rush hosted 50 novice race-goers, who were all in their 20s and 30s. This initiative is conducted in conjunction with Instant Grass, an agency that uses its consumer communities to create word of mouth support for brands. It’s a structured, hands-on, ambassador programme, in which an influencer (opinion former) plays host to approximately 10 people. These people get the inside track on a day at the races and this enables them in turn, to spread the word and experience to their friends. In this manner a small number of insiders can end up influencing thousands.
The novice race-goers were guided through the afternoon by their influencer and were kept up to speed on the basics of racing, i.e. draws, saddle cloth numbers, weights, distances and race types etc. The Project Manager of the ambassador programme said on behalf of Instant Grass: “Saturday was unquestionably the most rewarding and fulfilling day I have ever had on a racecourse. It may also have been one of the most exciting, a big statement considering that I've had more than 30 years of race going experience, with some pretty big high points. This was a very stimulating bunch of young South Africans to be around. They absolutely soaked up as much information as they could, they asked great questions and many of them raved to me about how the afternoon at Durbanville had caused a major shift in their perception of the sport.’’
