RINGER

Heard a story of a horses' legs being painted to emulate another horse. The painted horse was a 4/5 time winner(not sure). Then ran and won a maiden. A huge betting coup was made.

Anyone know the true story?

Yes this was done in the late 70's or early 80's by a trainer named Fourie or Barnard(not Jean)...I stand corrected... after the trainer was found guilty the horse (name escapes me at this moment) was a 1-2 time winner at the time of being subsituted in the maiden field. This horse retired a 4-5 time winner.

Yes Cats, you are right... it was Kiev a dark bay and he was a 3/4 time winner at time of substitution in novice plate...he had a white sock off fore leg which was painted with mentone liquid shoe polish...after this affair he raced in Arthur Faul's stable and won 7 races.

I have been asked to post this, name and details of poster withheld at their request...

****************************************************************************

I have recently read your posting on the “Ringer”. The Kiev ran under the name “Have a Deal”

Details of Trainer etc are correct – amount won ??? could be a bit overstated.

Owner a school teacher who apparently was “not in on the DEAL” , but also got warned off.

In the 1930's a ringer reportedly appeared in place of the favourite, Glen Albyn, at the July gallops. Worked terribly of course but the real horse still started 18/10 favourite and won.

Who rode the horse and was he involved in the coup?

Wonder if the money financed the national paving and walling company?
