Lots of shouting in the stalls nowadays, unlike 10 or 15 years ago.....
Whilst working on the noise levels on the stalls up here earlier this year, (quite old, need adjusting and cushioning against metal to metal noise) at Vaal, I took the engineer down to watch a start. I explained the basics re loading schedule etc and explained that some are difficult, could become fractious or rear etc etc, handlers up, pushers, all that. Went through the whole scenario, including that sometimes a jock may shout, just before the off and the starter would then let the horse settle etc, before hitting the button.
Well, they loaded, normal spread, some easy, some not. But, the engineer remarked to me just after they jumped, that not one rider had screamed or shouted. They were all silent, did their jobs and the field had jumped and were on their way..... Yip, it was a workriders race.......
Two weeks later, during the adjustment and maintenance process, I took him down to watch 3 starts, to check how noise levels were comparing.
There was shouting and screaming at every start...

Thanks Craig. My horse was already completely backed out of his gate when I heard the call and the gates opened. In my opinion the false start was the correct call, BUT it should never have had to be. I do agree with you mr G noise levels at start should be minimal. I remember The starts SOS called he would have us in the board room if we made any noise. And his starts where flawless.
