Last Wednesday I went to my first race meeting in England.
Kempton Park is a nice facility but not outstanding.
I suppose that all venues that install an inside all weather track will have the problem of remoteness and the majority of punters (around 250) stayed inside what is effectively a large well laid out betting hall with tables and TVs.
The supper facility upstairs is first class and every table has a television.
It was good to see in the horses in the ring and the jockeys that we used to follow on TT.
A lot of the punters seemed to be more interested in a televised dog meeting.
There were about 9 bookies in the ring but at least 3 of them were from the same company + William Hill and Coral were there. The bookies boards are all electronic with the odds being set off-site. The days of the independent bookie seem to have gone.
Made money and despite the bad weather had a good evening out but 16 pounds to get in is steep when you need Jodrel Bank to watch the races.

" A lot of the punters seemed to be more interested in a televised dog meeting. " Racing here in S.A. has also gone to the dogs.
