Futura is being touted as the horse to beat in the Gr 3 Cup Trial over 1800m at Clairwood on Saturday and it looks likely that with a field of only sixteen runners in this year’s Vodacom Durban July only the winner of the traditional qualifying event will get into the big race.

Trainer Brett Crawford said that the good looking three-year-old Dynasty colt had been doing well at Summerveld. The athletic bay still has a lot to prove and on bare form alone his current July odds of 11-2 are very skinny indeed. However, it is the manner in which he has won his races that has got tongues wagging. He took a while to get going off a slow pace last time out in the Consolation 1900 at Greyville, but took off half-way down the straight to win easing up by 1,5 lengths. That was his fourth win in just five career starts.

Many-times Cape champion trainer Mike Bass was the trainer of the second horse that day, Gifted For Glory, and was impressed. He said, “Futura looked very impressive and will be a tough nut to crack. He is a three-year-old and is high in the weights, but can probably afford to be.”

Bass has three runners in the Cup Trial, Abercrombie, Night Trip and Global Express. He said Abercrombie and Night Trip, who both have plum draws, were “very close” and the riding arrangements, with Sean Cormack on the former and stable jockey Grant van Niekerk on the latter, were only made in order to accommodate Cormack’s weight.

Abercrombie, a tall four-year-old by Trippi, was once a touted horse and has been a bit disappointing. Bass said, “He has always been a lovely horse, but needed his recent gelding and I hope it hasn’t come too late. With him it has always been a matter of trying to do his best and if he does he has a chance, although probably behind Futura.”

Abercombie produced a telling late surge last time out to win a Graduation Plate over course and distance, but he was well in at the weights in that race.

Night Trip is also a four-year-old Trippi gelding and Bass said, “He won quite nicely last time and before that finished just a short-head behind King Of Pain in the Magnum Mile (albeit when receiving 7kg). He has improved as a four-year-old and has matured into a fair sort.”

Considering he won going away over 1600m last time, he should enjoy this trip.

Bass said about the four-year-old Jet Master gelding Global Express, “I have been running him in staying races, but I think they are actually too far for him and 1800m is probably his optimum trip. He is 1,5kg under sufferance, but there are not many races for his type and he is in the race in his own right.”

A big danger to Futura will be the Geoff Woodruff-trained Master Sabina, who travelled down well from Johannesburg on Monday. This four-year-old by Jet Master was an unlucky loser of the Gr 1 Sansui Summer Cup, where he lost by 0,25 lengths to Yorker, as he was caught wide in the running before staying on strongly. He was receiving 1kg that day, but the latter has improved into the highest rated horse in the country. Master Sabina then lost his way, but Woodruff revealed yesterday that this was due to him heamo-concentrating and he needed gelding. He duly won well two weekends ago over 1600m at Turffontein in his second run after gelding, beating a good field, including former July winner Pomodoro, whom he beat by 3,75 lengths, despite receiving only 3kg. Woodruff is happy with Master Sabina, although he does have a wide draw of eleven.

Duncan Howell’s was bullish about the third top-weight One Cool Dude and said, “He’s doing exceptionally well and I think he will give an exceptionally good account of himself from a good draw over a track and distance that will suit him. His run in the 1900 was very good and I think he could have run closer as he only got going late.”

Sean Tarry said about his two runners, “Gold Onyx runs on powerfully and didn’t really get a clear run in the 1900. He needs to go close to be considered for the July and will run well although it is a strong field with the like of Master Sabina and Futura in it. Serissa couldn’t get into a Chapter Challenge race because of a technicality, but I’m happy to run him here. He’s a strong front-runner and needed his penultimate start over 1400m quite badly, so I’m happy he’s had a good prep and will run a good race.”

Justin Snaith said about Readytogorightnow, “His work has been fantastic and he had a nice prep run in the Golden Horse Casino Sprint, but he has been giving us a hard time at the pens and the handlers’ battle with him. He earned his rating against three-year-olds so has got to prove now that he’s earned it, but I’m expecting a nice run.”

Garth Puller runs King Jace and said, “He is in the deep end, but what he lacks in class he makes up for with toughness.”

Royal Zulu Warrior earned top-weight with a fine performance in the Summer Cup, but trainer Kumaran Naidoo confirmed recently that his particular soundness issues make it harder for him on left-handed tracks. However, he does have the very much in form Ian Sturgeon up. Sturgeon could bring the best out of this talented individual, who will need to be settled from a wide draw, so that he can display his excellent turn of foot.

Dean Kannemeyer has two runners in the Gr 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge over 1600m at Clairwood on Saturday, the brilliant miler Capetown Noir and the talented, “but not easy to train,” Ice Machine.

The stalwart Cape trainer revealed that L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner Capetown Noir could be going into quarantine on June 8 in preparation for a journey via Mauritius to Dubai, although this is not definite.

He said that the four-year-old Western Winter colt’s last run in the Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes, where he was beaten 2,6 lengths into third by Beach Beauty, might have come too soon after his unlucky short-head defeat in the Gr 1 HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes over 1600m at Turffontein.

Capetown Noir hung out badly at a crucial stage in the latter race, before running on strongly to be beaten just a short-head by Yorker.

Kannemeyer continued, “He is now looking like a bull. He was unlucky at Turffontein, it wasn’t his day. He could be better on left-handed courses and will love Clairwood.”
The striking looking bay four-year-old colt by Western Winter is the apple of Kannemeyer’s eye.

He said, “He stands at a handy size of 16 hands. He is beautifully balanced and has a lovely rein and shoulder. He has a lovely head and a big, bright eye, very deep, which shows his intelligence. He has a great temperament. On his journey to Johannesburg by aeroplane he was like Gary Player, he just mellowed out like one with many voyager miles behind him.”

Kannemeyer, as well as his staff and veterinarians, did a lot of work on the five-year-old Silvano gelding Ice Machine when the yard first got him at the beginning of the season. The dividends were immediate as he won first time out for them in a Pinnacle event over 1800m at Kenilworth last October. He followed with a high class performance in the Gr 2 Green Point Stakes over 1600m of the Kenilworth Old Course, flying from near the back to beat the likes of King Of Pain, Beach Beauty and Capetown Noir himself. He then ran below par in the L’Ormarin’s Queen’s Plate, in which Capetown Noir was back to his best on his preferred Kenilworth New Course, which has a similar length straight to Clairwood. Ice Machine then ran another cracker in the J&B Met, making up a lot of ground in the straight to finish a 3,4 length sixth.

However, Kannemeyer revealed that Ice Machine had “thrived” in Cape Town.

He concluded, “He badly needed the run in the Drill Hall. He had a few issues in his prep and we have done everything we can and he’s doing well. If he overcomes his issues he has the ability to beat horses like Beach Beauty.”

Ice Machine is drawn well in four and Glen Hatt will replace his recent regular pilot Kevin Shea, who will be aboard Run For It.

Dennis Drier said that the evergreen and ever reliable Beach Beauty was doing “very well” before her engagement in Saturday’s Gr 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge over 1600m at Clairwood.

Not much more has to be said about the brilliant six-year-old Dynasty mare as she has an exceptional temperament, is very sound and does everything the yard asks of her.

She has overcome wide barrier positions like Saturday’s countless times before with her tremendous early speed, which is coupled with her fine turn of foot and resolute finish, but Drier did admit that the outside draw on Saturday would be especially tough against the best of “the boys”.

The yard also has a few other chances on the day.

They run the classy four-year-old Jet Master filly Jet Aglow in the Gr 2 Tibouchina Stakes over 1450m and Drier sounded particularly bullish about her chances. He said, “She is very, very well and is a big runner.”

He said Jet Aglow stays up to 1800m and added, “She’s got real class over 1400-1600m.”

Drier tries the three-year-old Stronghold gelding Acapulco over 2000m in one of the KZN Winter Challenge finals. He said, “I think he will stay. He seems to be a different horse with blinkers and a tongue tie on.”

In the KZN Winter Challenge 1600m final the yard run the useful three-year-old Rebel King gelding Nineteen Fourteen, who ran a 1,4 length third in the Gr 3 Byerley Turk over 1400m at Scottsville last time out. He has the joint highest merit rating of 86 in Saturday’s event and Drier said, “He will be a runner.”

Drier also has the three-year-old Act One gelding Crescendo and the three-year-old Jet Master colt Eternal Jet in the 1200m final. He said, “They will both be very competitive. Maybe Crescendo is the better.”

The Requiem gelding Silver Age is the lowest rated horse in Saturday’s Gr 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge, but trainer Jeff Freedman holds this relatively lightly raced five-year-old in such high esteem that he is not talking about a possible cheque against the best milers in the country, but believes instead that he has a winning chance.

“He has the quickest time over that trip out of the whole field and he still needed the run when winning last time out,” said Freedman.

Silver Age indeed has an astonishing record as he has only run five times over the last two seasons, but has won three of them.

When he won the Gr 3 Christmas Handicap over Saturday’s course and distance in 2012, he recorded a time of 94 seconds, although he was only carrying 52kg and was receiving 10kg from the like of Gr 1 winner Slumdogmillionaire, whom he beat by 0,65 lengths.

Last time out in a strong Pinnacle Stakes event, when still needing it, he crept up in the straight from a handy position under a hands and heels ride, winning by a length under in form jockey Ian Sturgeon.

He beat another Gold Challenge contender Run For It by 2,4 lengths, although he was receiving 6kg and the latter was drawn wide in his comeback race and had to be dropped out before running on. Silver Age was receiving 2kg from the runner up, the tough handicapper Tipo Tinto, so will have to have come on considerably from the run to pose a threat in the Rising Sun Gold Challenge. Freedman believes he can do that.

Silver Age is obviously not the soundest horses, but Freedman concluded, “He has a few issues but is not feeling them at the moment.”

The Glen Kotzen-trained Gr 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge contender filly Jet Belle has proved that she fits the definition of a classic horse as she has Gr 1 form at 2000m, yet is still able to compete with the best sprinters at their own game.

The four-year-old Jet Master filly could be considered unlucky to have not qualified for last year’s Vodacom Durban July after finishing a 0,2 length third in the Gr 1 Woolavington 2000 and her connections have decided to have another crack at the big race this year.

She joined Kotzen’s yard late last year after shares in her were bought by Drakenstein Stud and she was consequently transported from Robbie Sage’s Highveld yard down to the Cape.

She suffered from travel sickness after the arduous journey, but still managed to pull through it well enough to run an eye-catching running on second in the Gr 2 Sceptre Stakes over 1200m.

However, on the back of the less than ideal preparation into that race, she then understandably ran a touch disappointingly in both the Gr 1 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes two weeks later, when beaten 3,85 lengths by Beach Beauty, and in the Gr 3 Prix du Cap over 1400m another three weeks after that.

By contrast, Kotzen said that her preparation in KZN had been “spot on.”

She started with an impressive win in the weight-for-age Gr 3 Poinsettia Stakes over 1200m at Clairwood on April 20, despite jumping from a low draw and having to make her powerful finishing run on the inside of horses, which is by trends the unfavourable side.

Her two possible routes from there were the Rising Sun Gold Challenge or Betting World Oaks and then the Vodacom Durban July, or the Tibouchina and then the Jonsson Workwear Garden Province.

The Gold Challenge/July is the route that has been opted for and if it doesn’t work out, she will revert to the Garden Province.

Kotzen said, “She is very well in herself and if she can split the first three she has a chance of getting into the July.”

Jet Belle will jump from a tough draw of nine and Stuart Randolph will be aboard.

National log leading trainer Justin Snaith has two runners in the Gr 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge over 1600m at Clairwood on Saturday, Jet Explorer and Run For It, and the former will be looking to cement his top 16 place in the Vodacom Durban July log, while the latter will need a big run to rise into a final field position.

Snaith said, “I think Jet Explorer will surprise a few people. He was unlucky when flying up for a close third in the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and is very well. He needed his run in the Independent On Saturday Drill Hall, it was just a preparation outing, and he is a hundred percent over his J&B Met gallop injury.”

The six-year-old son of Dynasty, Run For It, improved after gelding last year and ran second in the July. Kevin Shea apparently got hold of his agent a few weeks ago immediately after being highly impressed with a workout of Run For It’s at Clairwood.

Snaith said about his chances on Saturday, “His last run was a prep run, but once again he has got the worst possible draw, so will need a miracle against those horses. But you can never count him out and it will be interesting to see how he goes with Kevin Shea riding him.”

Snaith has some other chances on the day, including with a pair of two-year-old he holds in high regard, Aspen and Eros Girl, who run in the Listed Gatecrasher and Listed Devon Air Stakes over 1450m respectively.

He said, “Aspen is a very nice horse and will be even better as a three-year-old, but from that draw will have to be dropped out. I would have fancied Eros Girl strongly, but now from her bad draw we might have to just use it as a preparation run.”

Sean Tarry runs Whiteline Fever and Pomodoro in Saturday’s Gr 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge and admitted that their respective runs were originally intended as preparation outings for the Vodacom Durban July, although it looks like they will now need to go close to get into the big race.
He said, “The Pinnacle Plate event last time was Pomodoro’s first race back from his third in the Champions Challenge and we had freshened him up, so it was just a comeback run. Obviously something went terribly wrong, but there were no ill effects and he is still very much on track. He will run well enough on Saturday, but can only realistically be expected to run 5th or 6th , considering the merit ratings and that he is still prepping.”
Pomodoro will be ridden by Weichong Marwing from draw seven.
He added, “Whiteline Fever was a bit quiet before his run in the HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes, but he was eating up and working well, so as it was a Gr 1 I decided I couldn’t just scratch him on that basis. He is as honest as the day is long and there had to be a reason for that poor run and he was subsequently found to have a lung infection. He has had two pipe openers since then over 1200m (including a running on third in the Gr 1 Golden Hosre Casino Sprint), so we haven’t had to work him too hard. He has had a very good preparation and has a good draw, so will run well, but it is a tough ask in this field to run into the first three.”
The five-year-old Right Approach gelding is drawn three with Piere Strydom up.
Tarry also runs the four-year-old Caesour filly Dolomiti in the Gr 2 weight for age Tibouchina Stakes over 1450m, where she will be ridden by Strydom from draw nine. He said, “Dolomiti’s last three runs have been a little below her form and we are hoping for improvement.”
Dolomiti’s last win was actually over this trip at Turffontein last October and Tarry pointed out that she had been losing pace over sprints, so perhaps she is looking for a return to this distance, but she does face a strong field and has a tough task at the weights.

*
Charles Laird, Mike Bass and Joey Ramsden all have runners in the Gr 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge over 1600m at Clairwood on Saturday, but their charges do look to be up against it.
Laird runs Rio Carnival and Astro News and said, “They are in the deep end and are place chance horses. A line can be put through Rio Carnival’s last run in the Betting World 1900. If he hadn’t stayed he would have stopped at the 300m mark, but he was just never in it and just didn’t seem to enjoy it on the night for some reason. Both horses are very well. However, I think the race is between the top three in the betting (Yorker, Capetown Noir and Beach Beauty).”
Mike Bass runs the veteran Castlethorpe and said, “He didn’t pull up too well after the Golden Horse Casino Sprint, but he is fine again and I’m sure he will prefer Clairwood. He has always been a lovely horse and has run well in this race before (second two years ago to the mighty Variety Club). If he can still reproduce that effort he could run into the places.” Bass does not believe age has effected this horse and intends to campaign him as a seven-year-old next year.
Joey Ramsden runs the Magnun Mile winner King Of Pain. His KZN assistant trainer Alson Ndzilana said, “He has been at Clairwood for about two months and had to have a two week break at one stage for an abscess. But he is sound and doing very well and had a gallop at Greyville last Saturday.”
Rio Carnival and Astro News have Donavan Dillon and Muzi Yeni up from draws 12 and 11 respectively, Castlethorpe jumps from pole position with stable jockey Grant van NIekerk aboard and King Of Pain will be ridden by regular pilot Bernard Fayd’Herbe from draw ten.
Laird has another interesting runner on the day in the form of the Hussonet colt Nisa’s Machine, who is drawn in pole position in the Listed Gatecrasher Stakes over 1450m for two-year-olds. This horse has gone close in two maidens over sprint trips, so will receive weight from the winners, and top jockey Glen Hatt rides. Laird said, “I rate him and he is very, very well. It is not ideal to run him in features, but I couldn’t find anything else.”

Mike Bass holds the trump cards in the Gr 2 Tibouchina Stakes over 1450m at Clairwood on Saturday as he has the two highest rated horses, Hammie’s Hooker and Fly By Night, and the main opposition could well come from the Dennis Drier, Duncan Howells and Brett Crawford yards.
Bass explained the riding arrangements, “If there was only one runner Grant (Van Niekerk) would have been given first choice and he did ask to ride Hammie’s Hooker. But because there were two runners we decided to leave Bernard (Fayd’Herbe) on Hammie’s Hooker as he knows her well.”
He continued, “Hammie’s Hooker is thriving at Clairwood, she doesn’t normally carry this much condition. She is a top filly but there are some other top fillies around like Beach Beauty that she has been unfortunate to have had to contend with, and I think on Saturday Jet Aglow is going to be a hard horse to beat. I would say that this is probably Hammie’s Hooker’s optimum trip.”
Fly By Night caused a shock last time when coming within a stride of downing the brilliant Via Africa in the Gr 1 SA Fillies Sprint over 1200m at Clairwood. Bass said, “We were hoping for a place, but what really surprised us was that she was the only one who could give that filly a go and the rest of the field were three lengths back. I think she will get this trip as she is a full brother to another horse we trained, Jet Into The Wind, whose best trip was 1400m.”
Drier confirmed that Jet Aglow, who ran third in the SA Fillies Sprint, was “very, very well and is a big runner.” He said Jet Aglow stays up to 1800m and added, “She’s got real class over 1400-1600m.”
Howells’ six-year-old Doowaley mare Louvre proved to be a revelation after joining his yard last season and won the Tibouchina last year at odds of 36-1.
He said, “She is very well in herself. She is an honest hard knocker and needed her last run slightly, but it’s a tougher field this year and I would be happy with a first four finish.”
Brett Crawford’s Maybe Yes showed an impressive turn of foot when winning the Gr 2 KRA Fillies Guineas and from draw one will be a threat over a course and distance she should enjoy.
The next two highest in the merit ratings, the Justin Snaith-trained Jet Supreme and the Mike de Kock-trained Izora, can’t be written off, although Jet Supreme does look held by Hammie’s Hooker. Izora was easily beaten by Jet Supreme in the Gr 3 Umzimkhulu Stakes over 1400m at Scottsville last year, but has had an operation to repair a breathing issue since then. She has shown glimpses of top class form and has never seemed to have quite fulfilled her potential.
Bass has a high regard for his Seventh Rock filly Seven Grand, who runs in the Listed Devon Air Stakes over 1450m, He said, “She will enjoy the trip, but has unfortunately drawn very wide, otherwise I would have been confident. You have to give away a lot of start from that draw. I have been very impressed with the type of horse Seventh Rock gets.”
Bass was not concerned about Seven Grand’s starting antics, because when she lost ground in her first couple of starts she was very inexperienced and “didn’t know whether it was Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.”
Howells rates his Devon Air runner Just Lucky and said, “Her last run was very disappointing but she did return with a badly swollen eye. That race was far too sharp too and she is now over her correct distance. I am very happy with her and she is a big runner.”
He said easy Lover would also appreciate the step up in trip and had been showing good work at home, so he gave him a quartet chance in the Listed Gatecrasher Stakes over 1450m.
He added, “Rock ‘N Rose stays well and is well in herself so I’m expecting her to be in the first three in the KZN Winter Challenge 2000. Hunting Horn found 1600m too far for him and will be very competitive in the 1200m final with blinkers on. Perfect Circle is well drawn in the 1600m final and carries a light weight so will also be very competitive.”
