When your punting is taking a NOSEDIVE - what do u do ?
11 years 3 weeks ago
Hi guys,
would just like to know what is YOUR STRATEGY when you back 5 or 6 2nds or 3rd on a day.... what do you do ?
If it's been going on week after week, say 3 or 4 weeks - what do you do ? DO YOU HAVE A BREAK ? if so How long ?
or do u eventually back a horse like KINGVOLDT at 1/3 & hope u don't poison the favourite & then tell yourself...... I'VE BACKED A WINNER AT LAST !
would love to hear.
1 x bet for me today..... CALYPSO in the last........... LOOSING BET :X

my only advice is not to change your strategy in terms of value of bets...but you can change by taking bets you dont normally take...sp try exactas or quartets instead of straight wins. backing horses is about confidence....you may catch a quartet or exacta and get your confidence back..

Back them each-way - although the prices on places these days border on the ridiculous - might even be worthwhile to rather take the places on the unpredictable tote :

Stop punting. Go over your bets and look to see where you may be going wrong. Change your strategy and play on paper for a while until you see that you would be winning again. That's what I normally do. Has it made me a huge winner? No, but I know I've lost a lot less than if I'd kept on playing.

Find 3 horses that will "surely" place. Better to back at bookies that offer you 4 places. Get 5/2 or 28/10 and smash it.
Even that won't work sometimes if your luck is out.

@ Elvis --- That running second time after time can drive one nuts.
These are like phases. Happened to me so I started taking
place ATC's. Even playing shorter prices with small place
dividends, you can still land a reasonable payout when catching
3 or 4 places accumulative. You are obviously pretty hot with
your selections at the moment -- give it a shot.

Elvis I only play places now even if I like the horse strong to win.

I think it has quite a lot to do with concentration and focus.
You have to be incredibly vigilant in horseracing (or any gambling) as pretty much everything has to pan out perfectly for you to win. Everything from the odds, track, weather, the horse etc., is variable and can turn on you very quickly. Bookmakers can make a mistake and win. But not punters.
If you enjoy a 'trot' a subtle mindset often takes place and your discipline tends to slip. Never make the fatal mistake of reflecting : "This is easy". Because at that very moment something (often bizarre!) will happen to remind you just how fragile your short period of success is.
I find it very advantageous to take a short break after any run - whether good or bad. You generally return better focused, less greedy and less stressed (if you were experiencing a poor run).
Some of my worst days have followed very shortly after big wins - usually because I thought I 'owned' the sport at that point.
Conversely some of my best plays come when I am doing nothing. Believe me - good bets will find you if you are not in a hurry!

Elvis, my strategy as some are aware is simple... if you back the ones you think will win you will do well to get 3 winners on a card of 8, 9, 10. On a consistent basis, that is very unlikely! The simple fact is, it is blardy hard to find them or we would all be millionairres. Find the ones at double figure prices that you think have a chance, reduce your stakes accordingly and back them to win as much as you would on the 5/2 shot you actually thought would win. If you did R10 on one horse in each race of a 10 race card and just one comes up its been a free day. If they all lose you are only 100 down and you think so what, bit of fun etc. If two win you double up. But if you find one at say at 33s your away n laughing and you feel a darn sight better than one winner at 5/2. I had one bet main today, the patent I put on the thread. Took Butterfly Girl at 10s. I'm smiling.

The way I deal with it is to float my horse with as many as I like(often field) in an Exacata- You will be amazed how many times you run second and a dog wins and you have an exacta of over R100
