in order to get down to Kenilworth racecourse from where I used to live, I had to go through the booms

Nah think it's quite an appropriate term. I use it and don't see any problem with it especially considering ours is usually accompanied with the shooter known. As a hand grenade. What I hate is fake booms. And trust me there are plenty out there.
