JAP, you are quite funny, really.
So, you find it difficult to fill in a form, hand it over a counter and place a bet, or too difficult to call telebet, because you believe certain things etc.

So, you rather take a smaller return on your money.....

That is your prerogative. Its your choice, if you want to win less.... and let NOBODY stand in your way !B)-

JAP You are correct on that LG in not an expert in punting and you are bare able to choose where you punt
Having been making a living for 15 years is impressive
Can I ask do you have problems with limits?
Do you have to bet with many different bookmakers?
The open bet ie P6 etc do not affect me as I mostly stick to single bets doubles and sometimes the odd treble

At Mr Louisg. Its not about the open bet its about the horrible service we get from Phum who sells us their tote bet. Fix the service and then maybe, just maybe, some punters may return but I think the bird has already flown.
PS. The next time you raid Scottsville please invite Mavourneen as your guest of honour for the day and if you can, spoil her like the operators should have been doing many years ago.

Whichever way this cookie crumbles ( Tellytrack, open bet etc.,) I will GUARANTEE one thing in an industry where there are no guarantees :

THE OWNER & PUNTER WILL END UP FOOTING THE BILL

I happen to prefer International Racing so am quite happy not to have to listen to Julie, Rod etc., any longer. But, to be frank, the manner in which the streaming is now being managed has to be a case study for 'How did they chase me out of racing?'

Just because the operator is conducting warfare with bookmakers there is absolutely no regard for the viewer ( who is inevitably also a punter ). We now have streaming which claims there is a 2 minute delay before we get the picture. 2 Minutes? Like hell. More like two minutes AFTER the conclusion of the race. In the case of a jumps race this means a delay of up to 5 minutes plus.

As a result I am busy watching a delayed broadcast when the market on the next event closes. Etc., etc. It's chaotic.

Furthermore there seems to be confusion as to what should be broadcast. Yesterday, for example, there were three UK meetings evenly spaced. Did we get to see all of them? No! But there was betting on all of them and, in particular, not all of the Exeter races were shown. Result - long delays between events.

Sadly - we have also moved from a simple streaming service where local (UK) presenters filled us in quite helpfully on going, form etc., to having to listen to the usual Tellytrack sheltered employees babbling on about pretty much nothing except pool sizes and tote payouts.

Garrick,
it would be an absolute travesty if we have to suffer long term I, as home users. To the best of my very limited info, this is what TT are trying to avoid at all costs. I am often irritated by the presenters too. There are 3 MAIN reasons why I post reports on ABC about my runners -
1) I enjoy the site and quite a few clanners have become mates, even though they often see certain issues differently to myself.
2) What I have written remains and cannot be misquoted , something TT presenters have done before, eg I say, "working well and has a chance" only to hear on TT "LG very bullish about this one"
3) I have learned a hell of a lot from this site and the most important lesson that I have learned is that without punters, racing is gone. I now see it as my responsibility to share info with punters, whether I am proved right or wrong later, it doesn't matter.

Mac
Service is something that I have been on about for years. The bookies have posted and admitted here, that the open bet funds their facilities. No excuses for bad service, facilities at totes, but maybe with the open bet going to the pools, we will see upgrades. I do know that stakes will increase.....
As for Mav, consider it done ! I will pm both of you when I am down there.

JAP, why don't you just stick to punting for a living. Or post something OBJECTIVE on the ISSUE. Another useless post, assuming that I know nothing about punting....why not remove all posts from all who have not made a living from punting for 15 years..... or petition the management of this site and have me banned for posting as a Trainer, who is not entitled to have an opinion. Shit, we wonder why Trainers don't post here......

So, JAP, please post the advantages of the open bet here on this thread.

I agree in theory to what LG is saying I take my pa and pick six strictly on the tote but how can you take a big win bet on the tote 500 rand influences the market? The tote needs to come up with a solution on this and betting world not the solution as u cannot get a big bet on.

Interesting, Rob, because I definitely see your point. I wonder what the decrease in dividend would be, though, on the average race where you place the R500 ? Would it definitely be a smaller nett payout ?
But, I guess that if all of the open bet money went into the pool, the pool would swell very nicely. This in turn would result in bigger bets on the tote which would, in turn, swell the pools even further. Something like what happened since the pick 6 couplings went. As I say, I guess on this....

.....the operators approach to betting is to cater for the R20 punter.....suits me just fine...;)

.....when I get graft on the dogs....no place better to hide them in the exotics.....only a fool would squander such an opportunity on the open bet.....imagine hitting a 6 figure quartet....and only getting a 25% payout because of the limits....open bet when you are looking for the shorties.....for dog bets the tote will never short change you....:)

Years ago bookie limits on swingers was R25.....when you are looking to whack the biggies for small change the bookie is not the way to go

@ Louis

You don't even have to speculate on the impact of a bigger bet on pools - it is seismic.

As you might know I bet irregularly on the UK racing using Interbet. If it were not for fixed odds I would HABITUALLY get my money back with a nil return even though I often 'make a book' and back more than one horse per race.

I have seen a number of instances where my personal bets comprise more than 50% of the totals wagered. This evening, for example, I wagered over R10,000 on both of the fancied runners in the last at Lingfield and finished with a R6,000 net profit on the race when they finished 1/2 within a nostril of each other. Outside of my money there was not an awful lot more wagered on the race.

I have once or twice made the mistake of taking limited exotic bets on the tote through Interbet; I sometimes use the Exacta as a cover bet in a 'boat race'. It has generally been catastrophic even when boxing multiple runners. That's why I avoid using the Tote. The other obvious reason is the takeout. I am not particularly interested in funding racing to the extent that Saftote gouges my stake. It makes poor economic sense. Much like it would be silly for you to purchase identical feed from supplier A for 12% more than from supplier B. Why would you want to do that? Repeat that process 100 hundred times and the loss is stratospheric.

The best proposition for Saftote is to continue to market big multiple bets with many legs as this is the only way in which to disguise the extortionate takeout and still tempt the punter with the prospect of a potentially large payout.

Tote Win & Place bets, in particular, should come with a health warning. In fact the Tote should trade Win & Place for the open bet with the bookmakers. How's that for creative thinking?
