Cape Town prawn festival

There is no doubt as to where you should be on Saturday, 22 February!
Kenilworth Racecourse will again play host to the Cape Town Prawn Festival on their trackside lawns to mark the end of their unparalleled Summer of Champions racing season.
Taking advantage of the Cape’s wonderful weather this day at the races offers entertainment and excitement for the whole family. Thoroughbreds and jockeys will not be the only winners on the day as feature sponsor, Lektron have generously put up R50 000 worth of home appliances which lucky race goers will have the opportunity of winning between races throughout the course of the day. In addition to the 50K, one lucky race goer stands to win a 20K home appliance makeover.
Prawns aplenty will be on offer at staggeringly low prices, for just R99 a kg with chips, rice and a choice of sauces! Organisers are planning to exceed last year’s sales and will have on offer in excess of a ton of the finest prawns.
With no entrance fee to the course, live entertainment in the public beer garden, a range of free kids activities as well as the experience of witnessing some of the Cape’s finest racing, there really is no reason not to be at Kenilworth Racecourse on Saturday, 22 February.

Cape Town race-goers enjoyed a most successful day at Kenilworth on Saturday with Lektron Home Appliance giveaways and the Cape Town Prawn Festival generating tremendous enthusiasm! Lektron distributed over 50 prizes to the value of 50K, plus a 20K home appliance makeover to one lucky punter. The Racing Association then generously bought a similar 20K prize from Lektron to give away to another extremely fortunate, and appreciative visitor in the crowd.
Attendances were well up on last year and the day is evidently growing in popularity. Testimony to that is the hefty 900kg of prawns that were sold on the day!
The on course beat was boosted by Good Hope FM who were on track to broadcast live, whilst the roving Cape Minstrels performed jovial dances among the festive crowd.
"New faces at the racetrack is just what we want. Now we have the opportunity to engage with them and share our events calendar so they can come back again", said a satisfied Jenna Adams from Kenilworth Racing.
Events team spokesperson, Mandy Kannemeyer said: "We will be even more prepared next year - this event has become infectious really quickly, and prawn lovers will continue to flock in".
Keith Steinberg of pivotal sponsor, Lektron, expressed his satisfaction after the main race, saying that he was most pleased with the outcome of the day after loads of hard work. A passionate thoroughbred owner, Steinberg’s race meeting ended on an appropriately high note, when his filly Azaniah zipped through a narrow gap to win an exciting last race.
Clyde Basel, Phumelela Executive that oversees the company's Sales, Hospitality and On course Marketing division said that Kenilworth Racing is going in the right direction as more people become aware of quality racing during the Summer of Champions. He also acknowledged the vital contribution of a diverse range of loyal and new sponsors that provided essential support during the season.
"We started early in October with Kuda Insurance, then the Elusive Fort Cape Classic whilst Choice Carriers backed their prestigious fillies event which was followed by the ACTS Jockeys' International. Then came the classy Lanzerac Day in association with Cape Thoroughbred Sales. Avontuur presented a super Fillies Guineas in association with the Intercontinental Village theme, Calulo continued with the Premier's Trophy and then new sponsor Grand Parade staged an outstanding Cape Guineas where charity was also strongly emphasized.’’
Basel credited key sponsors, concluding, ‘‘Early In January, L'Ormarins presented the historic Queen's Plate, just two weeks before the Betting World Cape Flying Championship. February
welcomed the ever powerful J&B Met, which resulted in record tote turnovers. Another new sponsor, Magnum, recently came on board together with UCT in making a great debut and now the season ending splash with the Lektron Chairman's Cup featuring Cape Town's Prawn Festival!"

Hibs you must not be mistaken re the size of South Africa's prawns compared to the little pieces of 1 inch prawns you get here in your prawn cocktail or at Tesco's or any other supermarket.. There the prawns are huge, about 4 to 5 inches long.

One small problem...those prawns came from India....rather eat the Tesco shrimps in the cocktail ...
