Bar shoes support the heel and are there for various techinical reasons. It is a straight bar between the two points of the shoe.
An Egg bar shoe is the same thing, just that the bar is rounded, creating an oval or "egg" shape to the shoe. This is preferable in cases where the conformation of the horse would not benefit from square or straight support when the foot comes down.

.....but really do they need to confuse Joe punter by giving a full description of the shoes.....when " bar shoe" could have sufficed.....but if you as a trainer declared bar shoes and you had a rounded bar instead of a flat bar you are scratched for not having the right equipment declared.....but what of blinkers then.....does one declare full cups.....and not being allowed half cups or vice versa.....back to shoes....description egg bar shoe would have one think that you are racing a cripple.....and why don't they then declare when horses are racing with wedges or any other form of altered shoe.....:S.....seen a similar topic here when in Ozz they declared a horse running with a synthetically reinforced hoof....:
....so if the NHA want to declare the specific shape of shoe why not give detailed description of every abnormal piece of equipment.....
