If I had to listen to everything you said I would need a second brain to take it all in and there is no space for one!
< I think we are seeing the real horse now.

I will have bets on both these horses in the future:
Master of my fate and Captain of my Soul
I am sure they have named the above from quotes from William Ernest Henley's "Invictus"

If his mission is the Met, maybe give the Queen's Plate a miss - if he wins that, he would carry the Gr 1 penalty into the Met (on yesterdays's performance may not matter much - but I'd rather receive the 2 kg's from Jackson than be at level weights :S)

I have to say that of all the horses we featured during the "Stable Talk" series, and many of them have gone on to win feature races since we interviewed their respective trainers, this horse was the most physically impressive (well, maybe Jackson and Captain America were in the same league - Yorker, too). He is so incredibly like his great sire, Jet Master, as to make you gasp in amazement. Liezl King's terrific photos attest to that. Add to that the fact that his dam, Promisefrommyheart, was one of the best fillies of her generation, and his value as a potential sire becomes enormous. He is also superbly (and very topically) named, but that is dealt with elsewhere in this thread.
What a great tribute it would be to Madiba if a horse named after a line from the poem which gave him much comfort during the years of his incarceration were to win the J & B Met. Having played a tiny role in a movie which drew its title from the poem, and having admired Master Of Fate up close and personal, when we interviewed his trainer, Dennis Drier, you can rest assured that I'll be having a small "wager" on him on Met day.
Invictus
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
William Ernest Henley

Reading this thread always reminds me why bookmakers flourish!
I don't want to come across 'negative' but rather inject a dose of healthy reality into the discussion. ( Clearly this is a 'top horse' but still entirely unproven as a 'great horse'.....yet! ).
1.) The first thing you need to accept is that the 'juice' is now well and truly gone from the price. Seeing that this is supposed to be a BETTING site that should be important.
2.) As stated in an earlier thread I am unaware of any previous winner of this race going on to win the Met ( Quote : Those who ignore the lesson of history are doomed to repeat it ). The last occasion on which I opened my big trap was to gently caution you all about Red Ray over the relevant course, draw and distance in the recent RTR. How did that work out for you?
I then went back and reviewed the race a good number of times - both to make the case as to 'why it will win the Met' as well as 'why it won't win the Met'.
My first concern has to do with the distance. The dam's record suggests that she was at her best over 1600m although Jet Master has imbued plenty of his runners with the ability to get the 2000m trip. He looked to me to be at or fractionally beyond the limit of his range on Saturday. Time will prove me right or wrong but I would rather not punt a horse whose potential stamina limitations are already niggling me.
Although Master Of My Fate appeared to be running on solidly over the last furlong I am less than convinced if there was any more to come. The Met is 200m further and ( obviously ) there is stronger competition to be faced.
Whilst the vast majority of posters are waxing lyrical over the winner's performance I am sure some alert 'shrewdies' will not have missed out on the performance of the 4th horse - who was still nearly stone last when they moved inside the last 400m and will love the extra of the Met. I am more comfortable pigging out on the 66/1 still available ( although I already took 100/1 last week ) than the 7/1-8/1 about Master Of My Fate.
I can rate this horse no better than a solid each way chance for the big race at this point - with the emphasis on the place.

the only horses that excite me in sa are the current crop of 3yo colts...last years 3yo crop that were exposed to feature races were well below par ..the best middle distance horse we have had for many years variety club has gone overseas and left a massive gap...mofm won a group 2 against a field of mainly 4yos and some older horses who used this race to prep for forthcoming feature races and he won it under severe sufferance as per his rating...iv just had a look at the met betting and who would have thought a horse that had just won an average group 2 race has had no group one exposure would be second favourite for a race run under the weight conditions...i hope that the trainers of these top 3yos have the guts to run these horses against older horses in the queens plate met and clairwood gold challenge later in the year as the older horses are very vulnerable...variety club and gimmethe greenlite did it in their 3yo year and did ran 1st and 2nd in the queens plate as 3yos....the currie cup wasnt won in may and the met wasnt won in december so im with garrick
