BSA BUYS SHINE IN CAPE FEATURES

Saturday’s Kenilworth race meeting saw no fewer than five feature races run, worth a cool R3 325 000 in prize money.
This rich race meeting proved a bonanza for Bloodstock South Africa bought thoroughbreds. BSA grads won no fewer than three features on Saturday, including the day’s richest race, the R2 000 000 Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes.

Remarkably BSA grads filled the first three places in both the R300 000, Gr2 Selangor Cup and the R300 000, Gr2 Betting World Merchants Stakes. Truly a day to remember for Bloodstock South Africa!

The beautifully bred De Kock got the balling rolling for Bloodstock South Africa when he ran out a game winner of the Gr2 Selangor Cup over fellow BSA purchases Legislate and Speed Rocket. Remarkably, the first four home in this 1600m Guineas prep were all sired by former Horse of the Year and July winner, Dynasty (himself a former Bloodstock South Africa purchase!). Remarkably the first three home in the Selangor, De Kock, Legislate and Speed Rocket, were all purchased at the 2012 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale!

De Kock (Dynasty – Sharp Performer) was bred by the Gary Player Stud and is owned by Wilgerbosdrift. He also provided the trainer/jockey combination of Brett Crawford and Glen Hatt with their first leg of a feature race double – the pair would later team up to win the Ready to Run Stakes with Captain America.

De Kock was a R375 000 purchase at the 2012 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale. The handsome bay has already earned over R280 000 in prize money thus far, and looks sure to provide his connections with many more memorable moments.

Second BSA grad to salute in a feature this past weekend was Captain America (Captain Al – Requista). The 3yo downed hot favourite Red Ray to win the R2 000 000 Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes, in the style of an outstanding three-year-old. A colt with the stamp of a classic horse about him, Captain America has now won his last four races in a row.

The Brett Crawford trained colt was a R400 000 buy at the 2012 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale – and is yet another tremendous advert for the National Sale.

Bred by Varsfontein Stud (who are enjoying a purple patch this season), Captain America is owned by Mesdames Gurney, Nagle and Sherrell. He looks a leading contender for classic glory this season, and looks to be the Cape’s top 3yo at the moment.

The beautifully bred Tevez (Caesour – Minelli) is a half-brother to the wonderful champion Val De Ra. The 4yo picked up the first graded stakes win of his career when landing Saturday’s Gr2 Betting World Merchants over a star studded field of classy sprinters.

In landing the Merchants, which had been previously delayed from last weekend, Tevez defeated fellow BSA graduates Chave De Oura and Divine Jet.
A R700 000 purchase at the 2011 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, Tevez was bred by Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm.
Owned by Messrs Ressell, Jooste, Shirtliff and Mrs Jooste, Tevez has now captured three races. A previous winner of the Listed Sophomore Sprint, Tevez is the third feature race winner produced by the marvellous Elliodor mare, Minelli.

The latter, dam of Mitra and Val de Ra previously, has a Var yearling entered on the 2014 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale – watch this space!

Bloodstock South Africa would like to congratulate all of Saturday’s big race winners, and wish them well for the future.

I have always wondered in which way a "sale" influences how a horse turns out.

Well mostly in the way they are selected on pedigree and conformation.
And the time of year they are sold suits different types of horses.

A business must celebrate it's success and we are happy when our horses do well.
It is motivating for our team and it brings clients back to our sales.

Judging by the Pick 6 payout at Kenilworth the statement ...."De Kock got the balling (sic) rolling....." was unwittingly very accurate. The majority of the punters got well and truly "balled" on Saturday. Lol.
