I am not an expert ( i know hard to believe) but most racehorses struggle with breathing. This obviously affects their performance, oxygen in = more blood pumped = better performance.....
Because of cost, wind ops are mostly a final through of the dice for some horses. Cornel collars have aided horses, tying tongue down and other cheaper measures are done 1st......
Now if i was a trainer there are certain things i would do before i even considered working a horse....no wavering
1: based on pedigree and advice from employed pedigree expert i will GELD every single colt
2: all horses prior to training get a wind op ( either because of paralysis or soft palate)
There is much debate on this natter but currently there is a 60% improvement in horses post operation.
For me its a no brainer.....
Oh i would also have an in house vet at a fraction of the price

I hear trainers referring to entire horses haemoconcentrating and this being a problem that may require a horse to be cut.
Would appreciate some clarification on this issue.
Further I can understand that not every horse, even good ones can be at stud, this being reserved for the very best.
That therefore is an obvious reason why a lot of horses are gelded.

Corect BUT and its a big but......
Horse gets purchased
Goes into pre training or steaight to training
6 months later (R 40 k) ready for debut
Runs 16 lengths off
Try again
Runs 14 lengths off
Pay another 6k
Runs 8 lentghs off
Put blinkers
Works like bomb with blinkers
Another 6 k kak programme no suitable races
Runs with blinkers 6 lentghs off
Runs 4th yeahaaaa some faith and quartet so some cash back
Runs 5 th
Another 6 k
Runs 3rd
Gelding sugeested
Another 10k gelding
Another 6 k training month
Runs 3rd
Wins
Better chop off before and save owner all that months bills.....

that might as well be the case Pirates but a dynasty colt out of a centenary mare is likely to struggle over sprints and improve over further. I like the dam's name Beautiful Noise.....

.....gelding is not guareteed to improve performance.....one can geld a bad colt and get a bad gelding.....gelding a good colt can also rob a horse of it's talent too.....it is however nessisary to geld horses when their temprament is an issue or when they start putting on too much condition.....remember the threads on anabolic steriods....these products are used to stimulate testosterone for muscle conditioning which is exactly what the testes do for colts .......Testosterone stimulates the kidneys to produce erythropoietin which governs red blood cell production in the bone marrow and over production causes a high RBC count and this is termed haemoconcentation.......On conditioning some become so top heavy their weight is too much and can land up with joint problems.....I have seen well performing colts loose character and condition after the chop.....colts that are kept for breeding purposes but are in training are subject to haemoconcentration which can be addressed with medication....

interesting post Muhtiman....
I've just completed a small survey and it tells me that 16% of wins come before a gelding and 17% follow a gelding. on average gelding is just hyped up.....

Generally a gelded horse is easier to work with for the trainer..ask any trainer..and I say generally..generally horses will improve after gelding..thats a fact
