Ways to pay the rent

Back in the early 70's ,three of us used to share a flat in Rondebosch,Cpt.
We used to pay R 90.00 a month rent for our flat and each week we each contributed R30 each to do a PA to try and win enough to pay the rent.
Sometimes we won a few bob but one week we won the PA four times at Milnerton and it paid for one unit R 570.00,
The payout was R 2160.00,which was a hell of a lot of rent!
Considering that our average wage at the time was R 300 a month this was a huge sum.
Various shrewdies offered to but my ticket but I held on to it.
We had to go down to Greenmarket Square at 11 pm on the Saturday night to get the late night Argus to get the results and dividends.
I went to the Tote shop in Mowbray on Monday and they said I had to go to the HO in Caledon Street.
I went there and picked up a cheque, shook hands with Abe Bloomberg and had our photograph taken.
We didn't worry too much about the rent and dividied it out and had one huge party!

Sorry we used to contribute R 4.00 each per month.

When i was 18, i was an apprentice engineer in Ferranti and loved a drink and a bet...

Me and my mate were out one Friday night and we cracked a plan to go to Paris to watch the Scots play at Parc de what ever it was called..

Only trouble was we are broke,so i went to the RBS and borrowed £800 ,quite a lump, for an apprentice on £60 a week, was to get paid back over 2 years ::o

Anyway my mates auld man found out and put his foot down and said he couldn`t go,gutted and all that we decided to go for a session on the following Friday and ended up making it a weekend session with all our mates and spunked th lot between about 6 of us.Great weekend, what went on in the ferryboat stays in the ferryboat...

Anyway the following Friday i got paid, went home paid my keep to my mum(£15 and i used to get a £1.5 back every day for my Lunch (:P) ) dressed and over to the Ferryboat and the bookies (next door) got pished spunked the lot and woke up in a strange house the next day (:P)

Walking home Saturday morning past the bookies from the night before, i popped my head in to see if any of the boys were about.Rumbling through my Staypress pockets i find some pennies and stick a fc on at the dogs AND IT POPS got about £8 back or something ( brassed the favourite) so i had a stake for the morning dogs, winner after winner and i roll the £8 upto £50 odd .Delighted i stick a £1 yankee on and head home for a few hours kip before another night out. The 4 popped and i collected a right few quid nearly £200 or there abouts..powderhall here i come..

Me and the mate go to powderhall, the track had an incredible biased towards the inside dogs when it rained, and i start the night by betting the 1 dog with the early pace that never gets home 6/1 to £20 and it got home that night (:D

I think i backed the first 5 winners on the night couple of losers then the last 3 winners won close to a grand paid the loan back and got pished for a week on the rest..

That was my life for about the next 20 years ,living to gamble and party

Lekker story F. My old man always told me, of the tip he got, the day he had to pay to get my mother and myself out of the nursing home. It came home smoking and we were able to go home. Well what chance did I have ?? I was F@#$@ from the start !!! Haha I think the horses name was Godgertate or something like that.

Bob great stories and for some strange reason can't remember my heavy losses :S
The Union Jack when I met Sue and was the toast of Loanhead ( loanheed) for the locals
The 3 doubles and a treble with wabash, petty officer and MILL REEF when a best man in Geordie land
Missed the first race at powder hall and went through the card with Kilbelin Again when living in Broughton street with Suzie

Magic times ( to hell with the losses )

Thanks guys, a few very knowledgeable people out there ! Interesting I'm sure to look him up. Thank goodness Cogitate could run, shit I would have missed out on a lot, if I was still stuck in that nursing home ! This game of ours is filled with amazing stories and characters.
