Sectional timing coming to GC region

another positive from GC
Gold Circle consider tracking system
(19 August 2013)
David Thiselton
Gold Circle are exploring options of enhancing the television coverage of KZN racing by installing a racehorse tracking system.
At present viewers rely on the commentator’s call, or their own identification skills, to know roughly where the horses are lying in the running.
However, the best tracking systems around the world can display the horses’ exact positions on the course throughout the race by means of a graphical representation on the bottom third of the screen.
A number of antennas are placed alongside the track and these communicate, through wireless technology, with a lightweight radio transponder that is placed inside each saddlecloth. The time lag on the best systems is apparently about half-a-second.
The system is not only useful in real time, but also as a review tool.
It is able to compute the exact distance each horse travelled, which could be useful to handicappers.
Furthermore, being able to see the exact path a horse travelled in the virtual replay and its speed and position in relation to other horses would likely be useful for the stipendiary stewards and also for the racing media.
Sectional timing
The system can also compute the time it took each horse to run the distance, so could likely be used for sectional timing, an invaluable tool for punters which is currently not in existence in South Africa.
The stumbling block for Gold Circle at present in introducing the technology is the expense.

This technology is a must if we want to maintain our long term status in world racing...........also the laser technology that allows measurement of exactly how far each horse travelled in the race (great for horses involved in objections)
A lot was made of the fact that the proceeds of the sale of Cwd would be re-invested for the good of the industry!

It would be in violation of the NHRA rulebook section 72.1.14
'No person shall use or be party to the use of any electric, electronic, mechanical or galvanic apparatus or equipment, directly or indirectly, on or in relation to any horse.'

So I guess then a 'horse walker' is not seen as 'mechanical equipment' - yet another case where the rules are shown to be irrelevant to the modern game.
