Edition 3:
The Gold Cup and reflections on Champions Season:
The Gold Cup has to be one of the great tests of our supreme athletes and I get such a thrill from watching this race – I love the way we can see the start and really get up close and personal at the start of a race. It was third time lucky for the gallant son of Jallad, Jeppe’s Reef, from the Mike Bass School of Excellence , who beat off a strong challenge from Mike Azzie’s Masai Warrior. Canterbury Tale should give his sire Greys Inn a big feature race win soon enough and all in all it capped off a memorable and emotional Champions Season.
S’Manga you deserve all the great press you are getting and you definitely made it a season that will never be forgotten.
Mention must be made of Brian Burnard and John Jones registering their first Gr 1 wins in a relatively short space of time as owners, and if there was ever an advert for why people should participate and invest in this sport it was played out on Gold Cup Day when their horses crossed the finish first. Their reactions will stay with me for a long time and serve as an inspiration to all of us out there who are trying to win the race that will change our lives – it can happen to anyone at any time so make sure you come to the Emperors Palace National Two Year Old Sale as there will be future champions of the turf waiting to meet you!
Emperors Palace National Two Year Old Sale 15th /16th August:
This sale speaks for itself with a Roll of Honour headed by the likes of Jackson, Flax and The Apache – it can unearth world class horses without you having to remortgage. The Apache cost just R80 000 and has earned close to R14m - Scott Bros should be very proud of this horse and there are more to follow of that I am sure.
We have a strong catalogue that offers less horses for sale than last year and has the breadth, depth and value that our the loyal patrons of this sale have come to expect. We are well represented by the Big 5 stallions and have strong drafts from some of the new hot stallion power in SA.
Please visit our website www.tba.co.za for some write ups on the sale and remember to download the Ipad App off www.equineline.com .
The sale will be held on Thursday 15th and Friday 16th August starting at 1pm. We have changed the timings of the sale to accommodate our national buyers who want to get home for the weekend racing in their respective regions. Please note these changes for your diary.
Exciting news for all golfers is that Gary Player has agreed to be the Patron of our Golf Day where we will be raising funds for the Horse Care Units. The Golf Day will be held on Tuesday 13th August and I encourage all of you to participate - please contact us for details.
Some of the yearlings are available for viewing at the TBA complex now, please feel free to come and view over the weekend.
Super Sires:
Silvano Silvano Silvano! – what more can be said of this magnificent son of Lomitas, he is a super stallion and the record books are being re-written weekly it seems as he continues to dominate feature racing around South Africa and beyond. He is worthy of being our next Champion sire and we are honoured to have such a stallion taking over the baton from the mighty Jet Master. Silvano’s 1,384 runners won 161 races and a record R20,950,492 in stakes. His progeny earned more than R5 million more than the late Jet Master’s offspring – and they ran 95 times more.
According to a press release from Main Chance Farms, Silvano’s offspring won a total of seven Group 1 races with six horses in South Africa and abroad. That tally makes him the leading stallion by G1 winners internationally, ahead of the likes of Galileo and Oasis Dream. This is an amazing achievement for the South African breeding industry and congratulations must go to Andreas Jacobs and his team headed by John Slade.
Judpot has had an exceptional start to his stud career in SA , with two GR 1 winners and Gr 2 winner in his first crop. Sadlers Wells did this in his first crop and so puts Judpot in elite and esteemed company. This is a stallion to keep an eye on, and at R25 000 for a live foal offers excellent value for breeders.
Captain Al was the leading sire of two-year-olds. His 148 two-year-old runners won 34 races and earned R2,554,025 in stakes. One can understand why he is such a favourite son of Klawervlei.
It is pleasing to see some new stallion names gracing the winners enclosure such as Horse Chestnut, Kildonan and Sail from Seattle – these new faces bode well for our breeding industry as we continue on the journey of unearthing future champions.
All rooms are pointing to see the sea for our breeding and racing industry and we should be very positive about our future.
Breeding news:
Congratulations to Summerhill for winning their 9th consecutive breeders championship, albeit by a short head from Klawervlei. It is said that a stud is made by it stallions and after having attended the stallions days of these two super -studs I am very excited by the quality of stallion power that is bolstering our bloodlines. I must say that I was very impressed by the world class events that both these days are, they really are an excellent advert for our industry and our sport. Well done to both studs for an excellent year.
Of course a stud without quality broodmares is not a stud at all and it exciting to see some top fillies going back to stud ,and we look forward to selling their progeny at sales to come. We are always on the lookout for quality fillies for stud so please contact us if you feel you have a filly that has the credentials to make it at stud.
I know breeders are heading into their busy foaling seasons and we wish you luck in breeding that champion that changes your life!
Warm Regards
Tom
