As far as I am aware they only got a Merit Rating when they turn 3 or run in open company.

The Gold cup is normally run the 1st sat in Aug so MR would be official.

Rob Faux correct. But, if you nominate in open company with a juvenile from April on, they will publish that juvenile's MR.

On 1st August, all new 3 yo horses (ex 2yo's) receive their ratings. As Rob says, in the past, the Gold Cup was run in August. Any horse, 3 or older, will have MR published, after 3 runs on same surface.

I know Heart of a Lion had a MR of 97 before his last race (open company)...
